Duratrax Ice or MRC 989 -
12.22.2006, 10:17 AM
What do you think of these 2 chargers? I am looking for an all around charger (lipo and niMH/niCd) to travel with (vacations, going to the track, etc.). The Ice seems to give more battery info, probably a little easier to use but needs a power supply (I have a ps but it is a little bulky). The 989 comes with a power supply, can charge more cells at one time (989: 1-25 NI, 1-8 lipo Ice: 1-10 Ni, 1-4 lipo) and has a higher capacity (989: 19,900mah Ice: 9,900mah). So let me know what you guys think of each!

You can't go wrong with either charger. The 989 is still rather new, so long-term usage info. isn't available, but the ICE has been out for a couple of years. I've had my ICE for something like a year and a half, and at one point I had to send it in, but I got a new replacement within a week and a half after I shipped mine out.

I already own an ice but want the ability to do 5s. Right now i am trying to decide between the mrc 989 and the hyperion 1210i. I am leaning toward the hyperion because it has a few more features when used with there balancer. I really like the ability to see each cells voltage while it is being charged and it also has a backlight.

989 has alot of features for $140. I really like mine. I paid more than $140 cuz I got it right when they came out. No issues w/ it yet. Never had an ICE... they are supposed to be good too, but the 989 has capability for more cells.
I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

I like the ice. I have had the triton 1 and liked it as well. Just not as many options on lipo. I was considering the 989 as well for more lipo cells.
Peace!

yah I have seen those on ebay. I just am not going to take apart the charger and risk damaging it. Anyways I just ordered a 5s pack so I will decide on another charger soon. The mrc seems nice but I am a little hesitant because of bad luck with previous mrc chargers. So basically I think it will be the hyperion with the newer balancer around $180 or the mrc which I can get for around $130 but would have to use my current balancer. The ps is not an issue because I already have two.

I vote Ice. I just got one a couple weeks ago and it is phenominal. Will perfectly peak any of my batteries when set to just 3mv/cell. Its awesome...I can charge my GP's at 5.6amps and they are just luke warm when finished (cause it peaks so perfectly).
I've used to charge LiPo's as well. Seems to work flawlessly with the Hyperion LBA10 balancer.
Another cool feature is the graphs and memory and such. Makes things a breeze.

Go with what is going to fit your rcing needs. If you plan to go 6s on something
later on. You will like the 989.
Peace!
