Smile Got a new idea - 01.02.2007, 02:47 PM

OK I was thinking and it hit me a new idea. First you guys can tell me if it sounds good or bad-no offense taken-. I was thinking of instead of using lipo (if i would be using lipo it would be 2 Orion 2s 4800 packs-you cant talkme out of these for many reasons one being they are cool and light, but i know there are better lipos for less cash like 800mah to name one-).
Questions

1.) Would i get more speed/power/punch from going up from 4s lipo to 16 possably 18cell Ni_Cd, and if so how much more speed/power should i expect.
2.) Would i get longer run times with decent 16cell or 18cell matched batteries, Also if it is less runtime than the 4800 mah how much less.
3.) About how much more weight is 16/18 cells compared to the 4800 lipo Orions (2 weight 400 grams/13.2 oz), and will this significinetly effect my performance because the weight.
4.) How much cheaper am i looking to pay for 16 to 18 cell mached GOOD batteried.
5.) What are the best cells i can get for this as far as good runtime and good power.
6.) How long is they battery drop for (the time the battery getts slower and starts to be notacably getting ready to die) is it like hallf way into the ride or is it about 70 percent into the drive.
7.) How many charges do these good cells get before they are dead (meaning time to buy new ones).
8.) Do they die for good if you dont unplug them after every run like lipo(meaning they are shoot) i dont think so just making sure.
9.) Do i still need an external ubec for these cells 16/18
10.) Are they easer or more complicated to work with than lipos.
11.) Is it really worth the money i save, possably more power, easer mantance, more weight, and the battery drop of to go with these or is lipo much better, i am not sure of a priice but these batteries might be like 100 bucks cheaper.
(my setup- 333oz servo, 2 fans 7xl w/rc monster heatsink, hb diffs, 6mm cvds, slipperential, graphite chassis ti arms, hybrids, quark 125b, standard size 17mm dish wheels, crime fighters, esc heatsink, 36t spur, and 18t pinion.)
What are your opinions.

go for lipo, i sure like it.
near half the weight for the same power output.

Yea, you really cant forget the power to weight ratio. 5s lipo will be alot like 16-18 cells or MORE because of their high energy density. Imo lipo all the way!

The problem with nitro's these days are that they arent brushless... LOL

I'm running 16 GP3300's only because I'm buying my brushless system now and don't have the additional to invest in a new charger, balancer, and lipo packs (could total $400+ quite easily!)

I will move to Li-Po at some point though!

(unless you want to buy newly assembled GP3300 packs????)

I bought (4) six-cell side-by-side from max amps before they ran out. I have (2) new unassembled packs of 3300's and a set of lightly used 8-cell side-by-side as well.

all of the 6 cell 3300's are new/never used. I'd consider selling them and moving up to li-po/li-ion if someone were interested.

Best MAH rating I know of is 4300 and it will be for a NiMh cell (Nickel-Metal-Hydride)

Prices vary from $45 and up for 6-cells. A nine cell pack is likely to be around $70 and up depending on the cell quality (matched vs "off the shelf") and the quality of assembly. Check the maxamps site or contact Jason aka JAM who just joined RC-M yesterday. For sure he'll be able to assist!

I understand the 7XL to be a bit "power hungry" compared to the 8XL or 9XL or the Lehner equivalent. 9-Cells @ 4300MAH huh?

I'd say 14-17 minutes, but that's just a guess. Others here my be able to offer something more accurate.

I would also mention that 18 cells would take you above the disirable RPM limits of the 7XL. Consider the 8XL or even the 9XL for more effeciency and it will keep you in the 35,000 - 40,000 rpm range. (a Kv rating under 2000rpm/v would be beneficial, otherwise reduce the number of cells.
