Ofna Hyper 8 Pro HAS ARRIVED - 02.25.2007, 10:56 PM

Well guys, I finally broke down and bought a good 1/8 buggy. After owning my X-Terminator for a couple years, I can say that it doesn't seem up to the task of handling well at the local track (last time it only lasted a lap or two when the front endbell on the 540C 9L decided to come loose, stripping the spur gear).

Yesterday I cashed in four (yes, 4) paychecks, totalling something like $650. I put 50% into my savings account, and was still left with $325. From my boss at work I bought a Proline Revo aluminum steering arm and a Hitec 5955 (titanium gear 330 oz./in. servo) both brand new for $80. Then I sold my TC4 for $60, so I was still left with $300.

So, with my extra cash, I knew I had to get something good, and after reading a bit about the Hyper 8 Pro, the only major problem I read about was the fuel tank breaking a lot. But hey, that's not a problem with electrics. I had been watching a Hyper 8 Pro (used several times) on Ebay, and it had a Buy-it-Now price of $250 (the kit costs $410). Here's a link:
http://cgi.ebay.com/hyper-8-hyper8-p...em300083793778
The seller is fairly local, so it shouldn't take more than a day or two for it to get here after it is shipped.

I'll be doing a different setup with this than BrianG has with his. The motor will be in the rear, laying pretty much flat on the chassis. So far I'm looking at the Feigao 540C 8XL since I've had good luck with the 540C 7XL in my Revo (it has yet to exceed 140 deg). The battery will be a single pack, a Maxamps 4s1p 5000mah pack. It'll use a Mamba Max ESC. Overall, this should be a very light weight conversion, and the chassis should be balanced (left and right) with the motor/ESC on one side and the battery/servo on the other.

Sounds great. Should be a great conversion. Will you be selling your xterminator? Just wondering.

BTW - You may want to add it to your singature... although you may not have room for any more letters. :005: Maybe give some away to free up the room in your signature. :027:

It was already in my signature :p. I took out the TC4 line since it's gone :018:.
If there's a buyer for the X-Terminator, then I'll sell it.

MM,

Coupla questions for ya:

1. If the 7XL works great in something much heavier like the revo, why are you going go to a lower KV motor like the 8XL for the buggy? Seems to me that you'd want to go the other direction?

2. With the 8XL and 4S you are going to be at 30843 rpm. I've heard that the "sweet spot" for Feigao's is 35K rpm. Is this a problem, or not really?

I'm not taking issue with any of your choices, I'm just always trying to learn more. :)

Good luck MM, I'm sure you'll love it. The Hyper 8 is sooo purrrty. :) Now that mine is done, I almost don't want to use it. lol. But, it would be an expensive shelf queen...

Hi Sleebus.jones,

I think the gear ratio for the revo is higher compared to a buggy. So the 7XL motor or esc will not be as stressed in the revo as in a buggy. This in turn means one can use a slightly hotter motor with higher amp draw in a revo.

My personal experience is driving to the direction of 5S & 8XL on 13/46 gearing. 7XL on 5S on 13/50 gearing for my buggy is marginal.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.:o

MetalMan, you might want to take a look at that sellers other listings... it looks like he's got that same buggy you just got for 250buy it now listed up for sale.

If it's not the same buggy, he certainly used the same pictures and a very similar description.

Just figured I'd give you a heads up!

**Edit, it looks like he claims to have 2 for sale... Why he used the same pictures is beyond me**

I'm hoping to make my as inexpensive as possible. Ask me by PM if you want to know how it's being done :018:.

In the Revo, I had to use the 7XL due to limited gearing options. It has a "slipperential" (my own version), where the transmission ratio is 2.44, voltage is 16.5v nominal, and the largest pinion Mike sells is a 20t. With it I can't go lower than a 40t spur because otherwise the motor will not fit properly.

Yeah, weird situation. It seems strange that pics for two different buggies can look so similiar :005:. I chose the one which he said had a fewer number of races on it. Afterwards, I determined it would have been better to get the other one because of spare parts and a clear body. Oh well.

LOL, you have connections eh? After seeing how nice the buggy was when I got it, I knew I wasn't going to put anything but the best in it. I could've saved a ton on cash and went with an ebay kit and then XL motor and MM, but I'm happy! :)

The only thing I might change is to put a MMM in it instead (if it ever comes out) simply because I'm still not quite satisfied with the Quark layout. We'll see I guess...

I don't. Which is why I'm offering to sell my MT2 and X-Terminator :018:.

Sleebus,
1. glassdoctor seems to have had good luck with a sub-2000kv motor in his 1/8 buggy(s). I could go with a 7XL, but would prefer to use a less "hot" motor. But now that I think about it, I could get away with using the 14t pinion I already have laying around as well as a 44t spur with the 7XL... You may have just changed my mind...

2. I don't think lower RPMs is an issue for Feigao motors. Some guys run as low as 25,000 RPM, and simply gear up to get more speed (without adverse effects).

Yikes, be careful trusting me! :) I was just wondering, haha. I was thinking 7XL for my Hyper with 4S and 8XL for it if I was going to run 5S. I'm running a 10L right now and it does pretty good (i've got some vids posted around here somewhere) but I think the 7XL is calling to me. If I had a ESC that would handle 5S without blowing up, I'd go 8XL. That sounds pretty beastly to me. :028:

For what it's worth I am running a 9xl on 6s a123 in my hyper 7 and it is INSANE! I am running 12/44 gearing and it is a lot faster than I thought it would be.

Unfortunately I can't afford to put "the best" in it. But this buggy will end up being a testing platform for the MMM :).
