XLT 4 motor

Hi all,
I am new to the forum and have some questions for all of you that are knowledgable about 1/8 buggy conversions. I am converting a Jammin X1 CR Pro and will be using the MM controller and 4 cell 6000mha pack from maxamps. I am a machinist and will be making my own motor mount /diff bulk and battery tray. My questions come in on the motor. I have done alot of reading on here and had decided to go with a Fiego c8XL motor and then I called fine design to find out what the kv on his 8XL motor was and he tells me that I will not be happy with an 8XL, says it wont stay cool and that he recomends an XLT4 which he says was made for 1/8 scale, but he would not give me the kv for the motor. He said that with that motor and 13/46 gearing that I would see a true 42 mph. This buggy will be used for club racing. Any info you all have on Fine design and what motor choice you think I should make would be helpful, Thanks, Jeff

The fact that he won't tell you the KV should set off alarm bells IMO. There have been several reports of poor after-the-sale support. And saying the 8XL won't stay cool without a reason tells me he is just trying to make a sale and that's it. The 8XL is a good motor and would work well on 4s in a buggy. If you want more speed and/or cooler motor, you could step up to a LMT 19xx series motor. The Neu motors would be a good choice too, but they don't work well with the MM controller.

His motor will be hotter than the 8XL. and that his will stay cooler is doubtfull. Be aware that he is a true gentlemen on the phone, and will tell you anything you want to hear, but once the money is in he will turn into a different person.

Mike can make you any mount you want, for a fair price too. Better than the boat thingies fine is selling.

I know it sounds lame to talk like this about FD, and it really isn't my bag to do so. It may seem like i am a part of the rc-monster crew, which i am not. I test stuff for Mike, because he is a great guy with a heart of gold and will NEVER act the way chris does.

Chris told me on the phone that I would need to buy his motor clamp mounts and when I told him I was a machinist and would be making my own motor mount and batt. tray he ended the conversation rather quickly and said Good Luck. I guess I will just stick with my first choice and than maybe step up to a lehner or neu latter. Thanks

Yup. Chris Fine is not a person to do business with. I actually think the "XLT 4" as he calls it, is a 7XL. Its not made specifially for 1/8th. Thats a load of bull$h!t. All he did was put his own sticker on a 7XL and call it his own. Thats why he won't tell the KV. Get a motor from Mike. You'll get the same motor for less, plus better customer support. Well, thats not accurate since you won't get ANY customer support from Chris, so better isn't the right word. :p Just go with the Fiegao 8XL and a RC-Monster heatsink clamp and you will be all set.

Can't go wrong with a high end setup. (like the Neu/Lehner) the Lehner would work well on the mambamaxx controller, up to 5S (with an external UBEC)

4S on a buggy is more than enough. if you can swing it, the trakpower packs are the best cells money can buy. 120 bucks per 2S, and they come in a hard case. Since the MM controller has got a build in LVC the lipo's are protected as well. (a user on this forum got 54-55 mph on 4S of these babies in a buggy, with a Lehner 1930) a 1940 would be a better choice though.

The Neu motors run better on Quark controllers.

The first thing you need to do is to quit talking to Cris Fine. For one thing, his "XLT" motors are Feigao motors. As far as I've seen, the 8XL is probably the single motor that has the most applications in 1/8 scale conversions. They have plenty of torque and are not that hard to keep running cool.

My only other advise would be to go with the plain smooth can motor and use an RC Monster heatsink/motor clamp. I think you'll get better cooling and you won't have to worry about the motor coming apart. If drilled and tapped, the RC Monster sink also affords a good way to mount a fan over your motor.

Alrighty then - lets get off the Fine bandwagon - i think that AJ-7 got the input on customer support, and after the sale conversations... Lets keep this forum what it has always been - and not resort to the latter. and thanks for the post about the batts skellyo - ya beat me to it - LOL

Ok. Has anyone confirmed that this motor is a 7XL? That's my guess also but I didn't know if maybe someone has both and can verify that they run the same.

gotta love how often off the shelf products are designed specificly for a certain use with the application of a new sticker/packaging.

IMHO:

1. Go with stuff from RC Monster.
2. The conversions from FD have some flaws IMHO. The motor clamps do not really allow you to change pinion size. Also, the clutchbell mod will work if you are using a plastic spur, but it will become destroyed if you are using a metal spur.
3. One individual on here stated that his 8ight conversion from there immediately overheated, which is cause for concern.
4. I have run the lst2 conversion from FD and it does work, but it is not the quality in terms of the stuff you can get from RC-monster.
