Mamba Maxx overheating?

OK I have 2 almost exactly the same setups. 1 stock plastic Pede, and 1 full aluminum Pede.

I have them both programmed exactly the same.

Stock Pede
MM5700
12/90 gearing
Trany notched for more air to motor
And my motor temps are getting up to 180-190 degrees!!!!!!!!

FLM Pede
MM5700
15/86 gearing
Aluminum trany with nothing surrounding the motor
Motor temps run between 130-150, usually 140.

When I tried running 15/86 gearing on my Stock Pede the temps got up to 240 before I caught it.
Nothing is binding, and mesh it good. Both are running the same batteries, 7 cell IB4200's.
Why am I getting 40+ degrees more with the stock Pede with lower gearing? And 90+ degrees with the same gearing as my other Pede?

I dont hear anyone else complaining there temps are getting to high in there Pedes with stock tranys. Im wondering if my motor is defective. I already emailed CC but Im sure it will be a week or so before I get a responce. I need to swap motors and see what happens, but I havent had time.

What tires/wheels are on each vehicle? That will also play a role in the load on the motor due to the inertia of the wheels.

They both have the same wheels, stock talon tires with all-star wheels.

Just swap the motors between the vehicles. It's possible you could have a minor motor issue causing the excess heat. If it heats up in the FLM Pede, it's the motor, if not, it's got to be something in your drivetrain/gear mesh causing it. That's the best thing about having 2 of the same system...much easier to troubleshoot things.

Ya I guess thats the only way I will find out. Mamba should warranty this right, I just bought it last week. I just ran it again and the motor temp was 190.5.grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Leaves me with no run to gear up. And it really bothers me to have 2 identical trucks and motors, but one thats slower!

If you have both trucks setup the same and the lighter truck is getting a motor running hot, but the esc is running at a decent temp, the lighter truck may be under geared. From the circumstances that you are describing, a hot motor would indicate undergearing. Try a pinion a couple of teeth larger and see what happens.

I'm sure that I'll catch some flaming for this, but ...you say that they are geared almost the same. I know that it looks that way on paper, but in practice, the setup with the smaller pinion is going to have less load on it than the motor with the larger pinion. I think that the stock pede is way undergeared. Try putting your 15T pinion on the stock pede and see what happens.

Maybe the problem with the stock Pede's motor is that the rotor has been overheated to the point where it has been demagnetized. If this is the case, the motor would run less efficiently, and would heat up much faster. Definitely try the aluminum 'Pede's motor in the stock 'Pede, but use similar gearing as the aluminum one, or even a tooth higher on the pinion.

Exactly my though. I have demagnetized a few motors now. The motor will get extremely hot (ESC too) when you try to run it. Afterwards when I've taken the motor apart, the rotor it would be just barely magnetic.

Good suggestions, and I see what your saying about under gearing. Right now all I have is 12t and 15t pinions. I could try a 86t spur instead of the 90 though. 12/86

I have to wait for my FLM warrantied parts to get back for my aluminum Pede. They I can do the swap. Hopefully they will be in soon. I need to let CC know ASAP if there is a problem with the motor.

My ESC get about 130-140, not to bad. Just the motor, I dont think it should have gotten so hot with 15/86. Thats why I think there was something wrong before I installed it. As far as I know most people run a 15t pinion on there Stampedes and Rustlers with no problems.

Have you tried taking the motor apart? I had one particular 8XL that ran hot from the start. It turned out that the front bearing was bad.

No I havent taken it apart, I dont want to void the warranty. I just bought the motor last week.
And it seems the shaft rotates fine, it not hard to turn.

I see two things, that stand out imediately. 1; the first may be waaay undergeared and overrevving, you may need to regear to about 18/90 to help contol the heat. 2; the stocker has a plastic motor plate and will get hotter because of lack of cooling from the motor plate. If its not thermalling, 190* is acceptable by castle for heat
