ACn Car8 - 09.10.2007, 11:30 AM

I'm wondering if anyone here has run or even seen one of these run. The specs look a bit odd - most notably 60 AMP max which seems low for 1/8 scale. The thing that intrigues me is the case. I really like the idea of a square case that would allow mounting directly to the chassis. Any feedback at from y'all would be welcome.

What I like:
  • Motor mounts directly to stock mounting. Even if it doesn't, it should be pretty easy to drill holes in the chassis to do so, or make a pretty basic mount.

  • Wires exit the front of the motor. Especially nice for buggy conversions as the ESC is usually located opposite the steering servo right in front of the motor. Makes for much neater and shorter wiring.

  • Heatsink is a nice addition for obvious reasons.

  • The mounting force is on the "can" rather than the front plate. This can make for a very solid mounting without stressing the front endplate. Plus, the shaft doesn't have to be as long because there is no thick mounting plate for the pinion to clear.

What I don't like:
  • The mounting location creates a potential mesh problem if the chassis is not thick enough and flexes. Since the CD mount point is not lateral to the motor mount point, and chassis flex can cause mesh to vary, which we all know can chew pinions/spurs.

However, the solution for this is simple: Fab a simple plate mounts to the top of the CD and then also to the top of the motor.

  • 60A max rating. I really don't know why that spec is even listed unless it is a thermal limit or something. Is that max continuous or burst? 60A continuous would be crazy power since bursts can be 6x-8x average power. 60A burst would be too little power IMO because the average is 6x-8x less than the burst.

  • The kv is a bit on the low side for the typical 4s setups. However, it looks like a decent option for HV setups in the 6s to 8s range.

Just my take on it. I want to try one but want others to be the guinea pigs since it is in the Neu/LMT price range. How many poles does this motor have? EDIT: Found out they are 6 pole motors. Is it slotted or slotless?

EDIT: A little more reading at the site shows they recommend a max of 6s with 3s being the minimum. Does that mean it has a 30k rpm limit, or do they rate it at that low rpm simply because HV car ESCs aren't too common (or prohibitively expensive for most)?

What I don't like about the motor is that the mounting method really causes you to have to stretch to put the pinion in a place that would give good mesh with the spur, so the pinion is going to be riding pretty far out from the bearing. Ken told me that their reason for offering the long extended pinions was so that they could use their motor setup on an 8ight, which has the center diff mounted backwards (as compared to others).

As for the amp draw, the motor is a really low kv motor and the amp draw is probably right. Ken (at Mega) told me that they run these motors on 6S to 8S lipo, IIRC. At those voltages, the current draw should be low when geared for dirt track racing.

As for mounting the motor, I think that I'd have to do a bit of out of the box thinking with regard to mounting it. There has to be a way to get the motor closer to the spur.

I do, however, agree with Brian on the chassis flex issue. You really should stiffen the chassis somehow.

An other good thing about Mega Motors is that they work great with the MM Esc. I think Mike may have some of thier other motors as well. I have thought about using a ACN 22/45/2 for a truggy. the only thing is that the kv is a little on the low side for 4s.

the only thing I dont like is how the wires coming out of the front. to close to the pinion for me. It wouldn't bother me if they came out of the side like the feigao's do though.

I can only see the wire/pinion proximity being a problem with larger pinions like Mod1 18T. It looks like there is quite a bit of room otherwise, and if the motor wires are anywhere near as stiff as most others, there is VERY little chance of them flexing and touching the pinion.

I wouldn't mind trying one out but I'd like one with a KV closer to ~1800. Even on 6s, the total rpm is less than 30k, which means it would have to be geared up a bit for the desired speeds. I really want another Quark and they're only good for 5s. Hmmph.

thats the thing with such a low kv I would be running a large pinion. with my 1512 3d in my buggy (1700kv) I run a 18 and when I had a 12xl in it I ran a 20T.

I know it might be a small chance of them flexing but on $250+ motors I dont want any chance.

Yeah, I'm pretty paranoid about loose wires around moving parts too. If it were me, I'd make a little bracket attached to the chassis to keep them in place, but I really think it would be unneeded.

it looks to me like max burst at 60Amps.. but hey, 30 Volts @ 60 Amps is still a lot of nitro busting power.... nothing wrong with that... :)

If that's burst power (30v x 60A=1800w), then the average power will be around 300w (30v x 10A). Still not bad I guess...

I think it's more than 300W average... I'm guessing it should be over 1200 watts... guess it really depends on the driving... or the batteries..

I use the 72g 400 sized Mega 16/15/3 at a lot more than 300 watts continuous, I'm sure these motors are more capable than that, my guess is 60A continuous and knowing Mega even that will be underrated.

Thanks for all the feedback guys - I just noticed Mike lists one on his site. I wonder if he's had a chance to try one out and what his impression of it is.

What someone needs too do is make a brushless motor which fits into the standard mounting holes of a nitro engine. That would make conversions really easy. Could have a nice heat sink on it as well. I wonder if it's possible to fab a mount like that for the feiagos or is the can too big?

BikerTim, look at the first post, that motor does what you want!
