MGM Cooling Fans - 10.03.2007, 10:31 PM

I guess MGM sees the need to add cooling fans to their esc too. In race conditions, my MGM needs them.

105* down to 40* is some serious cooling!

Interesting. I might toss a few fans on my 16016-3s just for kicks. I think it looks pretty mean with those fans on it, too.

Bah, fans are for improperly-designed ESCs! Seriously, replacing the existing heatsink with something a little better does wonders - has never failed me yet and I'm pretty anal about electronic temps...

Fans really aren't designed to cool ESC's either. They are too fragile. I've busted lots of fans now! If they were built tougher, just imagine how cool we could be running. The NMB-MAT brand of fan seems to be a little tougher, but it still needs some re-enforcing.

Brian, where do you get your heatsinks from? they seem like they can be hard to find in the right size.

Most of my heatsinks are from broken things like TV's, computers, etc that I find around places and I toss in my parts bin. Then, I plan where and what I want to do and see if one of them works. If not, a little cutting helps. Failing that, I go to an online liquidation store and find something.

The heatsink improvement is my 1st choice. At least MGM is trying and admitting to the weak point. I have heard so many people mention about how cool they run on their vehicles without a fan. So, i bought one, wait...two and they over heat every time is a race condition. If have many fans that end up in the garbage which could have made great heatsinks. Anyone out there want to try, I'll take a couple.

I'm surprised by heat problems in the MGMs. Does yours have the haet sinks on the sides? Is it one of the 3.5mm plug stlte ones or the direct wire versions that Mike sells? The 3.5mm plugs can atually generate heat and be a problem.

I loooked at the heat sinks oin the side of the MGM alot of times and thought they would be perfect for a 30mm fan, but nrever had any reason to do it. My MGMs run very cool without fans.

I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

Gotta remember we aren't pulling 100A continuously to generate tons of heat. Judging by people's runtimes and battery capacities, the average amp draw seems to be right around 15A. Assuming ESC efficiency at ~90% and running 4s, that's about 20w being dissipated on the ESC. With any kind of airflow across those fins, they should stay cool. If your ESC is any more than 40*F above ambient, then a fan (or better yet, better heatsinks) would help a lot.

If you're MGM needs additional cooling, there might be another problem. Of whatever problems I've had with MGM controllers, heat has never been one of them. If you're esc is running so hot that it needs a fan, you might be overgeared.

Do you have the internal mod done to the Quark?

no, it doesn't thermal in my buggy but will if I use it in my truggy. I am a little hesitant to open it up and mess around with it.

My mgm overheated when imporperly mounted in truck after like 10 minutes of running in grass (esc recorded 105 degrees C) after mounting it to aluminum angle bolted directly to the flm chassis no problems whatsoever.
