mgm 16018, is this normal? -
11.24.2007, 10:42 AM
I have found 2 things that seem odd and wanted to see if this behaves the same for others...
1. When I have the LVC set to shut down once the lipos are low, I notice that the truck will start to cut out as I drive it after about 10 minutes. To confirm this setting causes this, I changed the setting to reduce speed, and the cutting out goes away.
If I put them in my rustler, the lipos will run another 15 - 20 minutes. When I put a voltage meter on them, the 2S was at 7.68 Volts, the 5S was 11+.
I use MaxAmps 6000 & 8000.
My thought is that under load the voltage may be dropping below the LVC point, and it causes it to cut out.
2. The brakes are strong, I have them set to the softest point, but when I use them, I have to move the throttle really slow. I also set the end point on the radio to 60%.
It doesn't seem to be proportional, I wonder if I should re-program the radio?
Anyone seeing the same things?

1. Sounds familiar, based on other peoples experiences.
2. Can you adjust the low throttle end point (or reverse end point)? I can do that on my laser 6 radio to give really soft brakes on the Hvmaxx. Something like that might help....

1. Thanks
2. Ya, I did that, I set the end point to around 60%. that does help some. I found it odd that it seems to do full brake as you move the throttle forward.

I'm having the same problem with the LVC. It starts to cut out and the packs will read around 3.8 per cell or so.

What brand lipo's are you running?
When you select Race Mode, it does turn off LVC, so it is not recommended.

anyone care to decipher this excerpt from the MGM manual ?
Quote:
Race mode: In race mode, the motor will be stopped when voltage of batteries drops below ca 4V, number of cells, their condition or current is not taken into
consideration. After throttling down to neutral, the operation may be resumed. This mode is quite harsh on accumulators, particularly for those
with more cells !!! Current fuse is disabled (that means it does not check maximal current !!!), the thermal fuse is set to 105°C. Warranty does not
apply to a possible damage of controller when operating under this mode.

Specifically, this bit....

Is that saying it will take the pack all the way down to 4v regardless of the number of cells ? OUCH! I think I will be ordering a LVC.

Yep, it will stop functioning at 4v, with no cutoff prior to that. This would be a good option if you used an external cutoff device.
One possible reason for the cutting out when set to "motor cutoff" (hard cutoff) could be a combination of long wires and connectors, assuming the battery can stay above the LVC point. BTW, the LVC cuts at 3.2v/cell.

Have you checked this? MGM told me that it was 3.1v/cell, but I suspect it may be more.

I run 2 maxamps 2s 5k's in series for 4s on my e-savage. I planned on picking up some neu batts soon, or some flightpowers.

A while back I did some testing of my own. Maybe it was 3.1v/cell that I came up with. It's been a couple years.

Novak make a LVC for 4s lipo, i think part number is NOV5071, but realy not certain of it.
Is somebody ever try it?
Novak claim that this unit stop the motor when batterie reach 12.5 volts = 3.125V/cell.
Maybe the MGM program in race mode pair with this LVC device could be a solution.

I'm going to try a diff brand lipos, PolyQuest. I will also use a single stick vs 2 with a Y adapter. I will have this setup in 2 weeks or so, I will see if this is any better.
