Neu 1512 2.5 Vs 1515 1Y -
01.12.2008, 08:49 PM
This might have been discussed somewhere here before, but I tried both Neu motors out today, and a Novak 4.5 system. I used a MGM 16018 on 14 EP4600's for the neu's. First I tried out a Novak 4.5 system, I have no way to tell how fast it is, but it pulls pretty good, a bit flat in the middle, and seems to have a screaming top end. Gearing was a little crazy 12/68 to keep it relatively warm. Not too bad for a $270 system, as long as a 5mm shaft comes out soon.
Next, second motor was the 1512 and right off the bat it has strong midrange, decent top end geared at 22/68. The strange thing is that the brakes were extemely weak, and it would continue to roll forever. I tried making setting changes with a programming card, but still no changes. Maybe the PC software will allow more changes, wont know till I get it in the mail.
Finally a 1515 1y, this motor flat out hauls the mail with 20/68 gearing. Good power everywhere, it cetainly doesnt disappoint. The odd thing is that it was the complete opposite of the 1512, brakes were extremely strong, and it did act as if drag braking worked. I'm wondering if the 1512 and 1515 winding make this difference (Delta, wye).

I can lock the wheels of my truggy when braking with a Neu 1512/2y (Jazz 55 ESC and 10s1p A123). You might be able to change your ESC braking behaviour better with the software.
If you rotate the shaft of both Neu motors by hand you will notice that there is a huge drag difference between the 1512 and the 1515. The 1515 needs a lot more force to get it moving and will stop earlier when you rotate it as fast as you can. There is simply more magnetic force due to its longer rotor.

I just thought it was interesting with no other ESC settings both motors brakes were totally opposite, not just a small difference. Hopefully the PC software will do more than the card. Another thing I had found is that the finned can motors only allowed me to run a 22/24 pinion while the smoothe would let me run a 20, maybe even an 18 if I had tried to run one.

I had to set mgm brakes to the lowest setting as they were just too strong with 1512 on rest of the settigns

I will not know whats going on till I get the PC interface/software. The programming card is horrible! There's not enough examples, they need clarfication, its too easy make a mistake.

programming card is so easy to use. all you do is just put jumpers to whatvever settings you like and connect the ESC
all the pc software has extra is setting number of motor poles (which esc detects automatically)

On my card, I'm using the Car/Boat Expert insert. Is this not the right one? It says SW version 3.12 and more. I figured this was the right one since my ESC has 3.14 on it.
My point of making mistakes is, when you put a pin on its easy to put it on 5 Li-cutoff, when all you want is 4 Li-cutoff.
How do you have your ESC set-up?
When I put a pin on Deceleration/Brake "hard" it made no difference for drag braking on the 1512, it would still roll coast forever.

i use the same insert as you do.
It has Drag brake setting and standard brake setting. You must change the drag brake setting.
I dont use any drag brake as i use motors with very strong magnets and they brake very well on their own. In maxx even the light setting is too much.
If you have insert in as it should be you should not mess up any setting
