Hot Hot feigao -
01.21.2008, 08:34 PM
Well, it was the first weekend with the brushless at the track. my Mamba was almost room temp, Lipo was <95 degrees, but my feigao was over 140F when I pulled it in after 15 minutes! i'm running a Losi 8T, True R/C 4S Lipo, Mamba Max (some tweaks), Feigao 9XL with the RCM heatsink clamp, gearing at 14/46. What can I do to keep the temps down? The truck is fast and the motor still runs, but has about .030-.060" endplay now. What can I do about the temps without investing much more and is the motor still fine with the endplay? I can swap to different gearing or should I do something else. Not wanting to go out and spend to much more cash. Thanks!

get a 3" radio shack fan if close enough you can cool the motor and esc, wire it to the supply voltage

Try going up a tooth if the controller and batt is cool. The temp after 15 min is not real bad.

140F for a motor is not bad at all, especially after 15 minutes on a track. I think most folks would be really excited with that temp on a Feigao after 15 minutes of running on a track.

I would be very happy if I ever had a feigao run at 140F after 15minutes. You can add a fan to it or try to gear up, but the motor should be fine as is. Iwouldn't worry unless it was running above 180F or so.

That is a good temp for a feigao. maybe put a fan on it, but it is really not necessary.

+1 to gixxer's comment.
14T pinion sounds undergeared to me. If your motor is hotter than your ESC, that's most likely your problem. 140F on the motor is honestly nothing to worry about. Demagnitization only happens around 200F, so you're fine. I'm pretty sure the endplay you felt was there all the time. Upping the voltage will help, but then you run into troubles w/ ESC and buying a new battery.

This temp seems fine. If I am not mistaken "hot" would be over 150 degrees. So if you are doing 140 you are doing perfect. I run about 143 after about 15 minutes of running my 9xl on 5s2p A123. Oh and that is with fans on the motor. So I think you are doing better than I am. Here is some good information for motor like the feiagos and the mm on how hot is hot: http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2200

Yah it was going for practice on friday night. I had it going until my Gorilla Strap broke and the Lipo was flopping around. Due to my hack work to hurry up and get it done, the ESC on/off switch was tied up with the battery cables so it pulled the switch contacts right off of the esc and my weekend with brushless was done for, still ran the nitro though. Time for some sodering to try and fix the contact on the board.
I won't be at the Ranch next month, but I will be at the Moto-Dome with it in April
I have a 16 tooth pinion I am going to try and swap. I am impressed, I could not heat up that ESC or Lipo hardly at all. I will try the pinion for now (I have a 16 tooth handy), I was thinking of maybe some ducting in the body to direct air more at the motor. I'm trying to hold out until the MMM system comes out until I have to upgrade if I do.

mustbnitro,
Notice that you have an 8T. Can you post some picture of how you mount the battery. I am doing mine right now and is looking for ideas.

I wish mine was that cool, I have an 8XL with RCM heatsink and 2 fans on 4s, 14/44 with a MM in a buggy, and my motor is between 80-90 degC (175-195 degF) depending on weather (not effected by temp much, but if it is dry it pulls a lot more amps with the better traction and gets hotter) after 10 minutes.

Heck, that is a great temp! I never had a Fiegao run less than 170 after 15 min!

My Feigaos are more like 200°F after 15 min of racing
Don't worry, you should be fine with temps like that.
