Quark service - 01.31.2008, 05:42 PM

I sent my 80b to S&T 2 weeks ago, no word. I'm not getting any response to e-mail and their phone # just goes to voicemail. Anyone know who to talk to or how to get through?

They didn't respond to me either, but I got my quark back after about 2.5 weeks, and that was with me overnighting it to them, with an overnight return label.

You'll get it back, it'll just take a little while.

Thanks guys - 01.31.2008, 06:39 PM

I thought it was probably OK, I'm just impatient. I guess I'll just have to get a spare everything! I really want to get a 6s+ capable esc anyway. Now, how to explain it to the wife

What happened to your 80amp ESC?

I purchased my first Quark 80a in Feb. 07. I ran it hard all year powering several different setups. I used it to experiment with several different motors, both inrunners and outrunners alike.

Then I put it in my E Revo. I ran it on 4S, 5S, and 6S. I thermaled it a few times. Then one day I'm sure I thermaled it, it shut down and never restarted again. I didn't let the magic smoke out. When I opened it up, everything looked perfect, just No Go.

I sent it in, and a few weeks, (2 or 3 weeks) later, I found a Brand New Quark 80 amp in my mailbox.

I couldn't have been happier.

Just stopped - 01.31.2008, 07:40 PM

It was running my E-Maxx outrunner. First time out it worked great, no problem. Second time out, I did a couple of slow runs around the driveway then it just rolled to a stop and sat there. No steering, nothing. It was cool to touch, no smoke, no drama of any kind (except my stomach plunging into my shoes) When I checked it after, I could hear a tiny click from the esc when I plugged in the battery. I was running6000mah 4s Maxamps at the time.
I'm glad to hear that it's a reliable unit. I guess mine was a fluke.

I you had no steering does that mean you were using 4s without an external bec or rx pack? 4s is too much for the internal one.
If you had a bec then you should still have steering even if the esc is gone.

When I burnt my first quark I received the replacement one 11 days after I first e-mailed them (to Australia). The second one was 3 or 4 weeks from me sending the burnt one to receiving the new one.

Bec - 02.01.2008, 02:27 AM

I think you've got something there. I thought since the Quark is rated for 5s, I didn't need a BEC. I don't see why the esc would blow, I would have thought the rx would take the hit. Does that mean the internal BEC will fry from trying to regulate the voltage rather than allow an over-voltage to pass?

Yeah, at 5s, you most probably fried the BEC. I would always use an external UBEC at anything over 2s or 7 cells. At 5s and a 3A servo load, that's 37.5 watts that has to be dissipated and the BEC is not even attached to a heatsink!

Some people say you can use hte built-in BEC up to 3s, but I've run tests before and the BEC heated up fast with just a very small load at 3s.

4s should be OK - 02.01.2008, 09:56 PM

I'm not saying it is, but I just re-read the instruction manual that came with my Quark. It says "over 4s a BEC is required". I didn't think I was that much of a stooge. I'll be running external BEC's from now on just to be safe.

I did have a super high torque digital steering servo in my E-Maxx when the Quark blew but I never gave it more than 4s.

Yeah I saw that in my manual yesterday as well. I remembered it said 10 cell nimh, but I couldn't remember how many lipo.
It's strange that it only says 10 cell nimh, but 4s, because 4s is more like 12 cells. I think they should have said 10 cells and 3s.
