4S to 5S -
05.20.2007, 07:22 PM
Hey guys,
I have a couple of questions about motor/battery setups.
Let's say that I'm running a 9XL motor on 4S with a 16/46 gearing. If I go up to a 5S setup, do I have to change the gearing, or will the gearing be right on?
Second question, with the example above, will going to the 5S battery cause the current draw to go up or stay the same?
Thanks.

If you don't change the gearing, you will go faster. If you are already happy with the speed, use the calculator to find the pinion you need to achieve the same speed with the higher voltage.
And yes, current will go up assuming that everything else stays constant. However, you may find your runtime going up simply because you aren't on the throttle as much.

Here's an idea - if you want to go the same speed when switching to 5s as you had with 4s, use a pinion that is four-fifths the size of the one you are using with 4s. So, 16 x 4/5 = 12.8. You could use a 13t pinion.

I was really just wondering if the current draw would go up. When I go to 5S, it is to go faster. I just didn't want to suck anymore current through my poor little MM controller.
So, from what I gather, if I go from 4S to 5S, but regear for the same speed, then current draw shouldn't go up?

If you don't regear, current draw will increase (assuming throttle is used the same way). The current draw should drop if you gear it for the same speed.
