Neu 1509 update PLEASE.. - 06.21.2008, 02:19 AM

I know some of you extremely wise team members recently bought and are running the Neu 1509 in your buggy and I was just wondering about the following:
• How it’s holding up?
• How are the temps
• How is the torque
• Are your running it on 3s?, 4s? or ???.
• Would you buy a 1512 if you were going to do it all over again knowing what you know now??.

P.s.
I really want one for my 808 to save weight but I don’t want to sacrifice power loss & or heat buildup, so I'm hoping to learn for your experiences.

I too would like to hear more about the 1509 in a buggy, as I am considering it too. So speak up guys!

my guess if you are running an 1/8 scale buggy you might want to stay with the 1512 if for nothing else but for the torque this wouls help in quicker acceration coming out of a corner and before hitting a jump...but this is only a guess since I am not a racer

The 1512 can be overkill in a buggy. I would say the 1509 would be perfect in a lighter-weight buggy (~8lbs) geared for around 35mph tops. I don't have any personal experience with the 1509 though...

That's what I was thinking Brian.
I remember people buying the 1509 a few weeks back and I was really hoping to hear some honest feedback from them. I've got a 8lbs buggy and I'm thinking of using a 1509 1.5y (4s / 5s) but before I spend the 200 I wanted to hear from someone first on their experiences.

just do it, we all know how much money you have to blow! lol. i just got the medusa 36-60-1600 on 4s, and after 10 mins in high grass, esc 98, motor 100, lipo 88, just a thought, this is with no heat sink either, i think it will do amazing at the track!

A Neu 1512 can also be overkill for a truggy, as it is able of peaks up to 2.5KW. But gearing the car properly becomes more of an issue with a smaller motor as it will heat up faster then a bigger motor under heavy load.

A neu 1509 is listed with 1KW constant and 2KW peak power. The highest peaks i saw in a heavy buggy (9lbs with 10s1p A123) geared for 40mph+ were between 1500-1900 Watt with an average of 250-400 Watt. This setup would have been "undriveable" for a track as it was way too agressive. All this let me to believe that a Neu 1509 fits from a power point of view.

The question is for what speeds do want to gear your buggy and at which outside temperatures will you run your buggy? Judging by your signature you already run a buggy with a Neu 1512. What temperatures do you get with this setup on a typical run? If you gear a Neu 1509 for similar speed i would suspect it to run somewhat hotter as it has to draw more amps to give you similar torque to your Neu 1512.

Actually I’m running my 808 on a 1515 1.5y on 5s (runs cool 110% after 15min) but it’s just too much power for my track and it too heavy for my 7.5lbs lady. I can go from 340g to 280g or if possible use a 1509 @ 212g. That’s a total saving of 128g. Plus I’ll same more weight by using a 4s inlue of a 5s. Possibly getting me down 200g in weight??.

My other buggy is with Metalman at the moment getting some custom fabrication preformed on it (motor and ESC mount) to hold the 1512 I received last week. I also picked up (2) PQ 4s 4500 30C lipos, to run on both buggies. So to make a long story short!, I actually haven’t had the opportunity to run my 1512 yet, I'm just making the general assumption it will perform as its required and I really don’t want to buy another 1512 if I can achieve the same results out of a 1509.

That’s actually why I started this thread, I know / (thought I knew) that some team members were running their rigs on a 1509 and I wanted to know what their opinion was of it?. But a man’s got to do what a man got to do and if I need to buy one for the team, then by golly that’s what I’ll do. It’s better odds than at Vegas, plus I’ll always have the motor and my memoires.


I'm thinking of a 1509 1.5y s @ 2400 on 4s or a 1509 2y @ 1820 on 4s??
I think i want to be at / around 2100 (??) rite?.

Ok, heres my take on the motor size question. I have not run a neu motor much, and only have one, a 1515 1.5d. I have run a crap load of other motors, and have formed the following guidelines for myself.

General belief is that we should be running motors around 35k rpm. That applies to feigao xl cans, as the are not very effecient. The higher quality motors, neu, lehener hacker c50, medusa, etc, can be run at higher rpms.

Here are my guidelines, larger motors like a 1515 can be run up to 40k rpm to provide good temps and will provide more than enough power to push a heavy truggy or MT to the 40mph range, or pull suitable racing gearing.

Smaller motors can be spun faster, like 50k rpm, and geared lower. That will provide similar power to the larger motor that is spinning slower with taller gearing. The feel will be different, no doubt about that. A smaller motor can spin up faster, and the lower gearing will help make up for less torque compared to the larger motor. Still not the same as the large torque motors, but if the smaller motor is in a lightweight vehicle, it will provide serious acceleration, and not draw too man amps.

I would say that a 1509 in a buggy would be fine, but you will want to get a higher kv than you would with a 1512 or 1515, and gear it lower to achive the same speed. Keeping weight down will also be a good idea, but you are on the right track with that already.

I run a hacker c50 8l motor in my hyper7. It is similar in size to a l can feigao, so somewhere in between a 1509 and a 1512. It has a kv of around 3000 and I run it on 4s lipo. So I am turning it around 45k rpm max. It is geared for 40mph, and it does not get hot, or create too much heat in the mm or the lipos. It is not as effecient as a neu, but definately much better than a feigao. I would rank it with the medusa 60mm motors. I need to do more testing with the medusa motors, but they seem to be an excellent choice for a buggy.

So for 4s running a 3000-3300 kv 1509 would be my choice. Something like 11 or 12 tooth pinion and a 46t spur should get decent track speeds.

As lincpimp pointed out: a smaller motor can achieve similar power levels then a bigger motor when you rev it higher. I started with a Neu 1512/2Y (1400kv) in my truggy which was geared 1:16,8 and it reached 38000rpm under load with 10s1p A123. I then replaced the Neu 1512 with a Neu 1515/2Y (1100kv) geared it 1:13 or 1:12,13 with the same batteries: the motor reached 30000-31000rpm under load. Both motors peaked at 2.5KW, top speed and temperatures of all components were similar. But the feel was different. The smaller Neu 1512 seemed more responsive, spun up faster and was easyer to drive, the Neu 1515 had crazy amount of torque and wheeled the car far more often as the smaller motor. Acceleration was almost identical with both motors as the chassis and tires were the limitation. Drive time was similar too.

Higher revving motors can become difficult to gear. 11 or 12 tooth pinion is the lowest you can go. You might need a bigger spur (truggy). By choosing a higher kv 1509 gearing becomes even more crucial as lower turn motors need higher Amps to achieve the same torque level as higher turn motors. I would crunch some numbers using the very handy speed calculator and look if you can gear a high kv 1509 properly. You may also drop Mike @Rcmonster a mail and discuss which 1509 would be best suited for 4s and which gearing he would recommend.
