Puffed Lipo? - 08.25.2009, 12:31 PM

I THOUGHT my Flightpower 3s 5000mah's had nearly a full charge on them, but maybe not. I drove it around bit, setting my slipper tightness, but didn't do anything high speed. Drove it around for about 15min or so.

So last night, I thought i'd put a fresh charge on them for today, and surprisingly pumped a charge (in sync mode) for nearly 70 min!! I thought that was a really long time. But I've also increased my Lipo cutoff on my MMM. So, that would have to mean they were nearly drained I guess.

They finished charging and I unhooked them and set them aside. This morning when I loaded them into my ERBE, I noticed that one of them was sorta difficult to slide into the compartment. I inspected it, and noticed that it had seemingly puffed! Now, I had recently put new clear shrink wrap around them. The stiffness of the battery was still great. It's like a brick. Not soft in any way. So, I'm wondering if maybe my shrink didn't get fully shrank up, and over the course of the last few runs, the battery might have gotten a little warm and caused the slack to maybe shrink up weird? I don't know for sure, nor do I know how to check this battery to see if it's on it's way out or not.

Any advice? I'm scared to run it in my ERBE for fear of it puffing and exploding. But I'm not sure how to test it otherwise? It wasn't hot when I pulled it from the charger last night, nor has it ever gotten "hot". Granted, these packs were both involved in the MMM fire that I had, which melted the old shrink wrap off of them. That's why I put new on. But they have charged up fine several times since then, and seemingly provide the same power they always have.

What to do?

Check the cell voltages to see if one or more is somewhat lower after its been charged and left to dit for a day or two.

Rest the lipo on a flat surface and see if it rocks back and forth due to a swollen cell pushing against the others and making the pack bow outwards in the middle.

Remove the shrink and carry out a closer inspection- trouble is sometimes they swell up during use then shrink back down afterwards, so the only real way to tell is to use it.....
