1/8 setup/racing questions -
08.03.2012, 08:59 AM
ok...been playing with the speed calc for a 1/2 hr or so ( Thanks Brian for this great tool !) and I was wondering to all the racers...When selecting a combo to race with how much emphasis do you put on motor RPM or do you pay more attention to speed for the track or a combo of both.
Reason I ask is I am trying to find as light a setup as I can for my mbx6 and still attain speeds of close to 38-40 while keeping the RPM's down. So, on a 3s 2650kv motor geared 46/18 I should get close to that in speed...according to the calc. the motor is spinning around 26k which is pretty good IMO.
Lately I have been paying a lot more attention to motor rpm on my setup trying to maximize runtime. Before I could care less. This whole thing came about from a recent bash session with my daughter. She has a Ten T with a 3s Tekin 2650kv motor and a mmp setup. I was using my truggy with a 5s 1600kv motor setup and she lasted another 6-7 mins more than me on battery runing side by side. I did some research on speed calc and found her motor was spinning 6K+ less than mine....big difference.
I am still thinking of getting back into racing for the winter...we'll see.
Just looking for opinions and thoughts.

I tried 3s, 4s and capacitys of 4000-6000 ...... escs of 120a, 150a and motors 4p of 280-600gr ....... after test a lot, for a buggy I recommend the next config:
xerun150a + leopard 4065 + nanotech 3s 5000-6000 ..... for me this is the best config for a 1/8tte (Im using in serious races and the top speed is around 35-40mh )

Thanks for the info....much appreciated. I ended up going with a 1900kv Tekin motor, RX8 esc for ultra smooth response and a 4S set up. Should yield me around 38-42mph depending upon gearing and the motor is spinning less RPM's than other setup's.

the final rpm is irrelevant ...... the most important is use a correct motor/batt/gearing .....
if I use a leopard 4074 2000kv + 3s + correct gearing only will have 22-25k rpm .... and I will have the same top speed and lower temperatures than the 4065 2700+3s ....... the difference is will have more spent of energy and +70gr.....

yes what you listed is impt to keep components cool and to obtain desired speed. RPM does play into the efficiency of the setup. Correct gearing/motor choice will lead to a cooler running setup as well.
If you can obtain a cool running setup with a lower RPM, then you get the most run time out of your system... which is what I strive for in all my rigs.
