Novak HV Maxx or Neo sphere - 04.22.2006, 10:05 PM

I have know nothing about brushless, and i never even thought about it till yestorday, so i have alot of questions. I have a rustler, but its all disasambled, and misssing parts, so i was going to pick one up cheap on ebay. I want to run it in the sand, but want it to have good torque, and speed. I eaither wan toget the Novak HV Maxx, or a LRP sphere neo stage 2. They are both around the same price to. The only reasion i would get the HV maxx is so i could run 14 cells. I also have a Tamiya horet, but i think a brushless motor would ruin all the gears. Will the Sphere neo have close to the proformanace as the HV Maxx? What speeds could expect from both? Which would have best torque? I just want a simple system, thats not to expencive, and goes fast.

Stick with the sphere the hornet will handle that. as for the speed it will be a handful. Lipos are a different makeup than nimh, it uses lithium instead of nickel.
I don't yet know as much about either as some others here so i'll let them elaborate.

Welcome to the forums and keep reading, every page will teach you something

People here hate Nitro, I love it. I start it, run it about 50 ft from me and it dies, I go after it. Perfect exercise

The hv maxx is made for a monster truck. It has gobs of torque. 14 cells is a lot of weight to run as well. I am not sure what your goals are. Some of the guys like the novak systems as well. Welcom to the forum to. The lipo is a lighter built battery pack. It retains it voltage bettery than the older nimh and nicads. It does have a few down falls. They are little more sensitve to what you do to them.

Ive been reading alot of threads here, and people either hate the Novak HV Maxx, or love it. 95% hate it and about 5% of the threads i read. it might be just bacause the weight of the e-maxx. How fast will a rustler go with a neo stage 2, with 7 high quality cells? Could i safly run 8 cells in the neo? Safly meaning like without risking blowing it up?

chances are 8 is a big no-no. im not sure about how fast it would be but the gtb 4.5 is another option if your looking for speed.

I saw this video of a sand dragster, and it was a rustler, with a hacker system i think, and 12 cells. Heres the link http://www.rcrockgear.com/rbgerrish...rich320x240.wmv

If the link doesnt work try this http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/showt...t=30603&page=2

I think i might just go with a sensoreless motor. Is this the esc that you can program for Acceleration, or top end or something like that. will i need anything else? And can i use the plane 4s lipos from towerhobbies.com? Are they really crapy because there cheap.

This is what i might get

MGM Compro 80 amp, 12 cell brushless car controller $185.00 $185.00
feigao5408s Feigao brushless motor 540 8s

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Or could i go with this?
Nemesis
8,9 or 10L

36mm x 61mm 282 grams
6-12 cells* - 5mm motor shaft

I would not even think about using an L sized motor in your car, the S is more than enough.

For a speedcontroller, and the fact that you want to use Lipo, i would personally take the MGM controller, it is meant for car use. I ordered an MGM too, they seem to be as smooth as possible. plus they have the ability to be programmed to do a shut off when the lipo's voltage drops underneath the 3 volts per cell.

Your question about the Lipo-cells from towers.. what lipo's? got a link? The 8S can take quite some current from your lipo's. so you need a few good ones.

If you go for an 8S 4S lipo is just too much. 3S is insane on the 8S.

Depends on how big of tire you got or going to run. alot of the guys like the 380 can size better than the 540 can size. I don't know cause I am newb at running the smaller stuff. You could go with a 12s with 4s lipo.

Here is a link http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...po&FVPROFIL=++

Are liPo batterys more powerfull than the standard c size battery's or just alot lighter than c size so it makes them faster. There ment for planes right?

I read a post about the MGM not haveing good costmer service, and it gets fried alot.

I am curious, where you find that thread, because here at rc-monster i haven't read anything negative about their products. It are the schulzes that are a concern in both meltdowns and customer service.

No, you can't say lipo's are more powerfull than standard C-size cells. It depends. They both come in all sorts and flavours.

With brushless you need the most powerfull batteries you can find. Lipo's are not meant for planes, they are meant for delivering much energy at a low weight.

With a lipo, you need to worry about the 3V cuttoff, otherwise the cell might be damaged.

When you want to use lipo for your truck, you need about 15-20C discharge rate and a capacity of about 3-4000 mAh

Here is the post from the thread. I've used a Mtroniks Genesis Truck and a MGM Compro 12012.

Mtroniks - very smooth, WATERPROOF, great customer service (2 weeks total from California to England, no money paid except for shipping there). Reliability isn't bad, had only one go up in smoke. This controller doesn't seem to like external BECs, my XUS Hobby UBEC causes terribly stuttering/glitching on my Truck with the red wire removed from the receiver connector, but is perfectly fine using the built-in BEC.

MGM - very smooth, brakes that do weird (bad) things for racing/track running, not so good customer service. Sent in my damaged (I think from water) 12012, and repair took 6 months, during which time none of my 10+ emails were responded to (from multiple email addresses, including from Mike). So far on my replacement the BEC has blown out on 4s Lipo (it's visible on the shrink wrap), whereas my Mtroniks Truck is perfectly fine (so far) using the built-in BEC on 4s Lipo.

I guess now im definatly going brushless now, because i also have a duratrax delphi indi car, and the stock tires have no grip to i put some hornet tires on it, and it griped relly nice, i put the GPS on it today, and it went 35.2, on a wet rode. I put a $20 13t motor in it. I was going for a nother pass, and i was 1/2 down the rode, and it just costed to a stop. I figured i was done anyway so looked at the GPS, and saw the speed, then whent to unplug the battery, and it nearly burnt my finger off. Then i covered my hands fith me swet shirt, and i pulled preety hard, and it wouldnt come apart. I walked home, and sniped the batters wires with plyers, and the last esc i have is trash, but what about my battery? Its a really good 6 cell battery that i only charged 4-5 times, so i better not be fried. Im 13 so i cant get a job till im 14, so its hard to make money, but if i sell my rc boat, and gravedigger tuber, i can get $580. I dont know what i should do. I really want to start saving up for a real car when i get my driving license (70 Nova), but im going to have to get a brushless sooner or later, so i might just order it today. I have $400 that i wanted to save. I was going to ask for the brushless for my birthday (May 28), i might ask for a aluminum pede chassis. But where can i get a crapy used rustler with no electronics, for around $50?

If you had a tamiya connector on it. The connector may have failed. It not connection the esc can't work.
