Number of motors doesn't mean anything...
It is possible to make a killer system with any approach, you just need to know how and what is the difference between one and another!
None of the sensoreless systems will outperform sensored setup in torque ratings at zero-to-low RPM, but then you can always compensate with motor size :)
Number of motors can be dictated by application and space limitations as well as price
