Wish me luck! -
06.04.2007, 03:31 PM
So, after having too much heat problems with the XL motors in my Sportwerks Mayhem 1/8th buggy, I have gone in search of a Lehner (not wanting to give up the Mamba). I have not had much luck, sent an email to FDM to see if he had any in stock, never heard back (rather not deal there anyway).
I have heard some compare the Lehner 1930's to the Neu 1512's. Would you guys agree that they would be comparable?
I ended up getting the 1930/8 that Mike had in stock. I know it is a little more Kv (2613) than I need for 4s, but I will try it geared down and see how it works out. If that doesn't work out, I will reconfigure the winds which should give me a bit over 1500 kv. If all else fails, I could try to run it on 3s in the buggy or put in my 1/10th MT2 on 3s and gear that up (mamba motors get pretty hot in that).
Any thoughts/ideas. Thanks guys.

The 1930 should do OK in a buggy. I have seen (here on RCM) other truck setups running the 1930. They ran a bit hot, but were in trucks. I've never had a Lehner, so I can't say whether the 1930 is comparable to a 1512. The 1512 is kind of short, but has a rather large diameter.
Since you already have the 1930, I'd see what it'll do. I would go ahead and reconfigure it for 1500kv, as I think that 2600 is too much. I think you'd be better off gearing up rather than trying to gear down in a 1/8 scale application.
I just started running a Neu 1512 that was supposed to be a 1900kv motor, but I suspect that I got a 1400kv motor by mistake. The more I gear it, the better it gets. It isn't super fast, by any means, in my truck on 4S; but it is fast enough for a track and I can run more cells through it. On 5S things start to get nuts. Lots of power on the 5S and 6S is still possible. If I keep the motor, I'll get a couple of 3S packs to see what it will do.
Since I started all of the brushless stuff, I've found myself going to lower and lower kv motors. Speed is nice, but when the excitement of speed wears off and you gain more of an appreciation for cool dependable running, the appeal of the lower kv motors really starts to show.

I know that 1930/8 is capable of running a buggy on 4S at 85 km/h.

Well, there you go. First hand knowledge, the best kind.
Be sure to post your results. Although I have the Neu, not being able to run it perfectly with my MM controllers is killing me. I might have to grab a Lehner when they become available.

Just wish I could have had some more choice on one. Although I did see a 1940/8 on ebay, 1/8th shaft though.

Take a pass on that 1/8 shaft. If you were putting it (the 1930) into a truck, I might have some concern, but since you are putting it into a buggy, I can't say that what you got was the wrong motor.
Like I said, I got this relatively low kv Neu motor and like it. All it takes is a little gearing. Heck, if I had it in a vehicle that weighed two or three pounds less than my truck does, it would probably be perfect.
If you re wire it to the lower kv form, just get yourself a couple of larger pinions. I think that a 16 and an 18T pinion along with a 44T spur will give you a decent gearing range. You won't be breaking any speed records, but you'll be running cool and for a long time, if what I've seen from the Neu is any indication of what to expect from the 1930.
Besides, with the lower kv setup, you'll be set for when the 5S and 6S esc that are coming out get released. Running that motor in low kv form on 6S would probably yield gut wrenching performance while sipping the current.

Yeah I was thinking the same, going 6s with the low kv. Wish there was a good controller for 6s, maybe one of the new compro's. That would be nice 3s in the smaller 1/10th then use same packs for 6s, don't need so many expensive lipos.

Just ran my 1/8 buggy on a 1930/10, MM and 5s Lipo last weekend. It was plenty of motor. It was actually wheelieing on hard starts and basically floating the front end off the ground anytime I had the throttle punched.
I had a small problem with some of the soldering work I did when chaging the 1930/6 (d config) over to a 1930/10 (s config). But other than the the motor was stellar. Ran like a champ. I also switched from a Quark 80B to a MM at the same time. I still think the Quark is a much smoother controller than the MM. Even with the Lehner I had some minor cogging issues on the MM. Nothing to worry about mind you its just that the Quark never had any and I'm spoiled now.
The 1930 is a great size motor for a 1/8 buggy IMO. For track use I would really need drop down to a 4s pack. But for bashing that 5s was killer. All ran plenty cool. I didnt temp it cuz I never felt anything with may hand that was of concern to me. I was able to hold onto all parts of the motor and controller as long as I wanted.
I origianally started off running thise buggy on a Neu 1515 and a Quark then dropped it to a Neu 1512 now down to a 1930. I really feel that those big motors are a waste in the buggies. They are just not big and heavy enough to need them. and the smaller motors are easier on the esc and still deliver the all the performance you can possibly use. I ordered a Feigao 540L/15 to try out next. I'm looking for a track motor on 5s and I think that that should be a low enough kv to work well, stay cool and still have more power than needed.
Good luck with the 1930. I think you will like it. I'm interested to hear how it goes for you.
I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

jhautz, be sure to keep us posted on how that very low kv Feigao runs. Although I haven't tried any of the really low kv Feigaos, of the ones that I did try, I found that they all over heat. The higher turn motors just take longer to do it.
