Hyper 8 Conversion: Need Some input - 01.09.2008, 07:20 PM

hey fellas i am planning to turn a hyper 8 into a bl since i'll be getting a losi 8ight for nitro racing to match my losi truggy...anywho i will most likely be running a 4s setup eventhough if i bought another esc I could run a 6s 8000mah setup

items i have right now:
mm controller
feigao 10xl
18 tooth pinion
stock center gear
could run 4s 8000mah setup
i think with the speed chart and geared 18/46 it should go like 40mph or something lol

i want around 35mph-40mph but i want runtime more than anything...and i am afraid the 4s/10xl won't hack it what would be a good direction to go with this?

I am also working on a mantis truggy but that's later

please lead me in the right direction...i have batts just need a better esc/motor combo i think

thanks in advance fellas

Here are some older pics of my Hyper 8 Pro, for your viewing pleasure:

Now I'm running a Neu 1512 2.5D/F (2000 kv), an Impulse 4s 4800mah 20C Lipo, 14/46 gearing (stock spur), no fan on the MM, and CCBEC instead of RX pack. This setup runs cool, unlike the 8XL you see in those pics. There is of course some slight initial cogging, but it's not that bad.

so with 10xl/4s will i be alright i should i drop it down some...i've been thinking about having it modded(THE MM) to accept more voltage but i just don't know if that's the route i should go

my main concern is using the full capability of my 4s 8000mah(2s in a series) through decent speed,temps,runtime..

Perhaps someone else can comment on temp/performance of the 10XL vs 8XL. But if I had to guess, I would think the 10XL might still tend to overheat on an 8000mah pack.

I think it's all about the gearing, within reason.

You can run a 35XL (if it existed) on 4s, but it won't work well if geared too high to compensate for lack of rpm because it is mechanically loaded too much. Plus, turning these motors too slow is bad because the ESC will have a harder time to get the rotor position when starting.

If you run too high a voltage to a motor, it will spin too fast and overheat just from sheer rpms regardless of a light mechanical load.

That's why I like to choose a motor wind that will give me around 30-35k rpm (for Feigao and similar) or 40-45k (for Neu and similar) with the voltage being used. It's a good balance between a high, yet safe, max rpm and allows reasonable gearing for a proper meachanical load.

For 4s, I would go with an 8XL Feigao. If you think you might go with more voltage (an extra lipo cell) later on, go with a 9XL for a little wiggle room. Just my $0.02.

By the way, you can see my Hyper8 buggy in the BL Conversions link in my sig (scroll down a bit). I was running 4s on a Neu 1512 2d (2600kv) and everything ran very well even geared high at 46/16. I've since dropped a couple pinion teeth and the ESC/batt/motor is barely warm (~110*F or less depending on ambient temp).

thanks for the info i would like to run the neu but i don't have those kind of funds so i guess i'll get the 8xl and put the 10xl in my truggy with a little more voltage...do those run safely on 6s 8000mahs? again only really looking for good temps, around 35-40 speed, and decent runtime...which i should get with such a high mah if geared correctly and can keep temps in check
