My CRT.5 breaks 60mph!!! - 03.17.2008, 01:21 AM

Got to do some spd runs this weekend and put the crt to the test. My goal was to build a good racer, but also one I could bump up for some really fast spd runs. It was hard to do, but managed to break 60 on the radar. So at least one goal is met.. Lots of near disasters and high spd crashes (mostly due to 50mph+ wheelies when I finally open it to WOT.) Really wish I had a longer straighter road to really lay it out, but its the best I got for now.

Short vid w/ lots of crashes:
<object width="425" height="350"> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/XnjTrx_LLXo"> </param> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/XnjTrx_LLXo" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="350"> </embed> </object>

My build thread is here. Basic setup is a OFNA ext chassis CRT.5, RCM motor mount, LMT 1920/10, MM, and 4S and 3S Neu 30C 2500 batts. Gearing was bumped upto 18/46, and ran 1/10 buggy dirthogs. Also did some runs on the 3S batt and was pulling 50 on that. Didn't get to get ET data, so god knows the amps I was pulling, but everything stayed really cool, so I think less than with the heavy mashers on.

Looks like fun. Gotta love a vehicle coming at you at 40+ mph not touching the ground.

I have a vxl pede coming that i am going to try for 70mph? I do not see it happening, but I have a hacker b50 5s and a neuenergy 3s 5000 lipo!

Great Video!

That has got to be the longest cartwheel with the most flips that I have ever seen!

Nice e-crt.5 Finnster. If you plan on doing more speed runs you may want to read my post on boiling the suspension arms. I'm running arms that are boiled for 20 min and they are much for forgiving on the cartwheels than the stock arms.

Does LMT make a motor that would be good on 2S for the crt.5? My Novak GTB/6.5 velocity setup runs great, but I'd like a bit more punch for clearing the quad at our local track.

sikeston34m,
Unfortunately, cartwheels with the crt.5 are somewhat common. I think it's due to the very square wheel base.

E-CRT.5 Monster - RCM chassis, MM/Medusa 50x3300/3s, truck tires, 1/8 shocks
E-CRT.5 Stock - Sidewinder/4600/2s, buggy tires
E-8ight - Tekin RX8 2000kv/4S
E-8ight T- Tekin RX8 1700kv/5S

LMT makes a huge assortment of motors, so you can certainly get one that will fit the bill. Obviously the GTB will have to go tho.

I did see the thread on the arms and boiling. I'll keep it in mine if I start breaking them. Surprisingly I didn't break anything on the truck thru quite a few passes and nasty crashes. I ran the truck for a whole pack before the vid w/ similar results and the batt tray coming loose was the only damage, despite the mid 40sF temperature outside.

I dare not make that a habit tho. I really really wanted to break 60 in the CRT, and was really happy when I finally got it. I had a few good passes that were slower as the batt was cold and not putting out full power. After a few runs to warm things up it ran like a demon.

G/L on the 70mph pede linc. Keeping my CRT under control was a handful, just too much throttle and the front came up. The wind likes to catch it then and yank it over unless I dump the thr and/or brake. I can't imagine trying to do it in the pede.

The motor can still take 5S easily, but I can't imagine trying to control even more power. :)

Wow, that’s impressive and entertaining to watch!

Do you have a link for LMT motors? I know little about them and would like to read up on their performance figures.

LMT

2 pole, high quality motors, so they will run with just about any sensorless esc, plus they are 36mm diameter which makes life easier.

Awesome vid Finnster, its scary to see something that small travelling so fast- 'stit-ish' comes to mind when seeing the handling...

Linc, I had a pede several years ago that I got to over 55mph using a Feigao 12s and 12 GP3300 cells on M2K tires. It was absolutely uncontrollable at that speed. I can't imagine 70 in a pede. I had to remove the body to achieve 55, because it was catching too much wind and flipping the truck over.

Good luck, and let us know if you achieve it!

Uh oh, I just bought Linc's 12S to run on 4S in my old rustler that got replaced by the CRT and given to my wife.... I wasn't trying to break spd records with it. She'll have to be careful. ;) Maybe I should have looked for a 16S :)

I had the LMT in the Rusty before also on M2Ks and 4S. It was pulling 55 pretty well, but a nasty flip broke the tranny case and the motor was moved to the CRT.5. I never did much testing with it, but the power was balls out. Too much for the rusty. IDK how the VXL drivers are keeping those things together. Good news is the Mtroniks ESC held up to the power really well. Didn't get too warm either (tho it was 35F outside...)

The LMTs (Lehner) are really nice, but they are a bit more pricey than the Neus and harder to find. I happen to pick up one for a good price and teh MM didn't run the Neus properly at the time. Either is a good motor IMO.

Cool vid!

What tires were you running that video. Was it the Prolines?

Someone recommended the Traxxas Jato Anaconda tires to me (was using Road Hawgs before and anything over 25-30mph was like driving on razor blades). They can handle the speed without balooning much and will give you more control - bet you could get 60mph again with much more control.

Although - I ran 3S on a 1930/6 and the speed is intense. I've run it with 4S and with that one extra cell it just hits a point where it wants to take off like an airplane around 45-50mph.

I've just installed the RCM extended chassis and went from the stock wheels to Proline 30 series with Dirt Hawg tires (awesome 40mph on the grass) and a pair of Traxxas 2.8 truck wheels with Anaconda tires. I haven't gotten a chance to run the Anaconda's yet, but I am going to bring the 4S pack with me the first time I do because the extended chassis is so much more stable than before.

I used to get bored after 15 minutes because I kept having to right the truck over from cartwheeling. With the ext chassis I think I may have flipped it twice in 15 - 20 minutes.

Cool stuff!! I love this little buggy more and more every day!!

Traxxas victory 2.8's are a nice alternative as well to the 30's.

That is insane Finnster and hugely entertaining , you might want to lower the chasis or put an airfoil on the front producing some downward force keeping that front down

Those do look nice, maybe I'll give them a try if the 30's do me any dis-service.

Surprisingly, I do think (short of getting foams) that traxxas does make great tires for high speed stuff. I've probaly tried every type of Proline tire (which are great on 1/8 buggy) but they balloon big time with truck tires at high speeds.
