ESC recommendations PLS (non-MMM) - 03.18.2008, 08:46 AM

First off, I’m a noob to electric and a former nitro convert (got one thing right at least).

I’m looking for some input regarding a quality and capable brushless ESC to drive my Tmaxx conversion. I’ve read, researched, and queried a number of folks regarding the various car/truck capable ESC’s on the market presently, yet still don’t feel I have a good enough understanding to make the decision alone. So any input from the more experienced would be very helpful.

My present setup consists of a single 4s(25c) 4900mah lipo pack coupled with an inexpensive Fieago 7xl. This is likely just a temporary setup to get me bashing and help familiarize myself with the electric side of the house. Eventually I can see stepping up to a higher-voltage system 6s~8s (<29.6v) coupled with a lower kv motor; and would like to have a single ESC that can accommodate.

I don’t mind so much the cost of a capable MGM, but all these issues floating around regarding LVC and/or neutral nose-diving isn’t convincing me to go out and buy one. I don’t mind waiting for the MMM if it were soon to be released, but I’ve seen posts dating back to March of last year detailing the same similar status.

So if anybody has input, comments, or opinions on the direction they’d take in my shoes, please speak up as I could use your feedback. Thanks in advance!

A lot of people have good results running a Mamba Max on 4s. TeknoRC even recommend it for their Revo conversion. Can't offer much more input sorry.

Buy a mm for now - When you go HV then sell it for a $20-30 loss and get the best on the market at the time...

One key decision is are you running mechanical breaks...

The mm is your best bet at the moment. I have good success with it and 7xl motors. Just make sure that you gear for around 40mph, and you may want to use a fan on the mm. I am guessing that you are making your own motor mount, as not much exists for the tmaxx. I have done a few tmaxx conversions, and found that the rcm revo mount works well.

Keep in mind that you will need to disable the internal bec in the mm as it will heat up too much on 4s. The Castle bec is a good choice for an external bec and can also be programmed if you buy the castle link.

Thanks for the comments all…

I’ve withheld the urge to impulse buy the MM many times over already. I guess I could always pick one up to hold me over, and then retire it when the time comes. Heck I imagine my RC collection may continue to grow and could likely use it elsewhere.

I’m simply using an Emaxx tranny on my UE nitro (thunder) chassis. I suppose a custom motor mount coupled with a center-diff setup would be pretty damn neat, but a (3906) emaxx tranny bolts right in where the nitro tranny used to be and makes the conversion rather simple. It's the electronics I'm struggling with
