Need more voltage then the 4 AA's RX BEC pack...what upgrade? - 04.03.2008, 10:53 AM

Hey guys I'm looking for a upgrade to the 4AA batteries in the RX pack. I need a little more voltage and more run time out of it. I do need it to fit in the same space though since I have my RX pack in its factory case. 6.5 to 7.5 volts would be nice. Right now my pack with brand new 4AA's puts out a max of about 6.1-6.3 volts. So a little more would be nice to boost the range a little and also get a little more power out of the servos.

2s 123 would work nicely as a rx pack.

You can get the 1100 mah cells now so it should weigh less and be much smaller than a 4s aa nimh pack

Couple of things here:

1) Boosting the voltage will not improve the radio range, especially on the receiving end.

2) I assume you mean 4 Alkaline AA's (not rechargeable)? If you want rechargeables, a 5-cell NiMH pack can be purchased fairly cheap. That will be 6v @1.2v/cell, but will be slightly higher off the charger.

3) Overvolting servos will give them more speed and power, but at the expense of possibly burning them up. Just like our BL setups, more voltage on a particular setup will draw more current and create more heat.

4) To get more runtime, you need higher capacity, which usually means physically larger/heavier cells.

5) Best way to go about this is to use a UBEC. It's lighter/smaller than any receiver pack, and will provide as much runtime as your main batteries can dish out.

you can get cheap 6 volt packs on e-bay, they cme with the proper plug, hump packs will fit in the same place, you will see more actual voltage and runtime from a six volt pack than 4 aa's, also, plugging the battery into an open third channel rather than the battery slot will give you servos more voltage

Really?? In all the receivers I've looked, the power and ground connections on the battery port were simply paralleled to CH1/2/3...

I read that a long time ago, it was based on the assumption the power channel wasn't paralleled to the servo channels, but if they are I'm wrong, as all plugging it into the third channel did was parallel it, come to think of it, I've never opened up a reciever, I have a couple that need antennas, time to get on that

If you have to stay with the AA cell you could try some lithium cells instead of the alkalines. I have been running them in my TX and get much longer life out of them and their initial voltage is higher then alkalines.
