10L gearing question

10L gearing question - 09.12.2005, 05:02 PM

I was having trouble with my esc overheating so I got a fan. ESC is fine now @ 110f, but the motor after 20min was 200f!! I have a Hacker Master Comp and a Fiegao 10L with a 10/51 gear combo. Should I gear up on the 10L motor? Does the 10L like heavy loads more than high rpms?
I do have a 13lb emaxx with 40 series mulchers, are the wheels/tires too heavy for this motor? I'm gonna try stock Revo tires/rims and see if it works any better, but only after I play with the timing/frquency settings on the esc first. Testing takes awhile as I only have one set of Lipos for this truck and they get so warm I'm afraid to charge up again in the same day, so it's only been one test a day so far.

What rears are you running the stock or UEs? Are you running a two speed or single tranny? How many cells or volts?

I'm running UE diffs, single speed tranny fixed in 2nd gear -- G-Maxx. 2 x 2s2p lipos for 15.6v <-- I think that's right?

actually it would me 14.8 volts and i think i would try a 12 tooth pinion because if im not mistaken the ue diffs have a different gear ratio than standard. the problem is probable to many rpms.
if this is the problem which i believe it is then it should be fine with a 12 tooth pinion. please correct me if im wrong.

I am thinking that you may have truck geared to low. As strange as that sounds. Seems brushless can be geared to low. Do you have a 12 tooth pinion or even a 14 to try out? I am not the best brushless man. I am learning though.
Ue diffs are a 3.31 to 1
tranny is a 1.72 to 1
pinionand spur is 5.1 to 1
grand total of 29 to 1 final drive seems kind of low geared.

Well, you might have seen my results in my other post -- controller lost its cookies. Gonna try a 9920 and 6XL combo this time, this better do it!! :C:

Sorry to hear about your controller. Did the gearing seem to help with motor temps? Did you get a chance to tell is the real question.

No, it didn't seem to help much. I spoke with a guy today that seemed to think the 10L and my heavy truck with 40 series tires and 4s lipos was too much for the motor and ESC? The motor was trying to draw so much current to get it to move that it just got hotter and hotter until the ESC blew, which seemed about right based on my experience. ESC seemed cool to the touch with the fan blowing on it, but inside it was cooking! Motor just kept getting hotter until it shut down, and then trying it again with softer timing the ESC let go.

The 10L never really ran much cooler than my C50 Maxx Hacker, although it was faster!

I understand what he saying. I like the big tires myself. I found the feigao xl type motors seem to work better. I think it is the torque of the motor. Pulls the truck around with ease. Don't worry. You not the only one had to learn. I bought a lehner xl version. Got two run on it. Fried the motor. Live and learn right. I hope you get it straight.

i know what you mean...i got my dad on my case cause i spent $225 on a 9918 and it got fried after about 8 runs and then after i got it warranted the magnets on the rotor in my motor came off and still needs to be fixed....
