running a 5v fan on 16v?

well im getting a fan and wondering if i just hook it up to the ubec or what?

If its a 5v fan and you run it on 16V you will fry it in about 30 seconds or so. I have done it twice and have 2 toasted fans to show for it. You are better off getting computer fans that run on 12V.

I don't even think you would get it up to speed and it would fry.

this is a laptop fan for some reason i cant find 25mm 12v fans i got 2 of the 5v on the way found them for like 4 bucks each or something, ill just run them off the ubec, i just liked the idea of the power leads being connected right at the power leads of the esc

they draw very little power so running them on a ubec is the way to go.

yea just a little more length of wire but no biggy

I run 2 40mm fans on 18v.... they are fine and havent even heated up, let alone fry

Do you run 5V fans in series? fans act like resistor if it series every fan takes about ~9V. 5V fan can run some time on 9V but definatly not long, lifetime will drop dramaticaly. But run 5V fan on ~16V will fry them for sure. Running 5V fans trough UBEC is OK!

I run 12V 30mm fan on my MM on 4S lipo which is fully charged 16,8V and fan is OK. Maybe it will have shorter lifetime but who care because it works on hard environment anyway dust/Rocks/Vibration it will fails soon anyway.

no in parallel, oops forgot to mention that they are 12v fans, they are each getting 18v :D. same concept though
