mah: 4500 vs. 5000

hi everyone,

Im looking at various 30C lipo packs Neu, Polyquest etc. I was wondering how much difference in runtime i would see between a 4500 mah pack and a 5000 mah pack.

Reason is, i can get a 3s 30C 4500 mah Polyquest for $152, and a 3s 30C 5000 mah Neu energy pack costs $188. So, is the 5000 mah worth the extra $72 it will cost me to run 6s?? Both being Enerland cells im assuming the performance will be the same between the packs.

Well, runtime is going to be obvious, its going to be about 11% more runtime for the 5000mah pack over the 4500mah pack. So if you get 10 minutes on 4500, you will get slightly over 11 minutes on a 5000.

So, when you first do the division, price comes to 29.6 mah per dollar for the 4500mah pack, and only 26.6mah per dollar for the 5000mah pack. So, you can see that mah per cost, the 4500mah pack is a better deal.

However, you must also account for the increased current capability of the 5000mah pack. Not only is it 11% more runtime, its 11% more current (15 amps). Not a lot, but could be the difference the larger spikes and surges.

Lastly, you should factor in weight. If the 5K pack is significantly heavier, then try to stick with the 4.5K pack. Plus, saving 72 bucks already puts you nearly 1/4 into a second pair...


So, it depends what is worth it to you. I would personally go with the lightest pack that I KNOW will have plenty of current for the setup. Based on the fact you are using 6S, current shouldn't be too high unless you have significant traction and about 10lb's of weight on the front bumper to let you shell out that kind of power.

I'd say the 4500mah are fine if you ask me, and are what I would get.

this is a bit wierd, Neu energy 3s 5000 mah packs = 384g, Polyquest 3s 4500 mah packs = 416g

Also, how long would it take to charge a 4500mah pack roughly? and what charge rates do you guys normally use?

Charging at 1c, which is what most recommend will take one hour, no matter the mah on the pack. So in your case, 1c is 4.5 amps.

It is best to charge lipo's at 1C, so you would charge that 4500mah pack at 4.5 amps. Or the 5000mah pack on 5.0amps. If your charger can charge the packs at full power, then it should take roughly an hour, or hour 15 minutes.

I also find that weird that the higher ma pack is lighter... Could it possibly be because of the taps used (or are they the same?) Or the connectors maybe?

I have one of the 4500 packs in 5s. They are 30C packs so they tend to be heavier than the 25c. Also it has ridiculously heavy 8 gauge wire in it. I posted pictures on a thread about it when I got it cuz I laughed so hard at how fat the wires were.

Here is the thread. So far the seem to be good cells. I only have 4-5 cycles on them so far though.
