Whats wrong with my tranny? - 09.12.2005, 03:36 AM

So I've been playing with my T-Maxx while I wait for parts to come in on my E. I got stuck in some bushes and tried to put it in reverse but it wouldn't go. So I kept flipping the switch back and forth to try and get it to go into reverse and it wouldn't go. I guess I could have walked the 10 feet where the truck was and moved it, but hey, I've got reverse and I wanted to use it darn it. When the truck is shut off I can see the shift rod going in and out of reverse really easy, but when the motor is running, it doesn't want to go.

I upgraded the shifting servo and that still didn't work, although if the motor is at a low enough RPM it would occasionally go. And just the opposite as well, if I'm in reverse, it doesn't want to engage forward either while the motor is running.

Has anyone heard of this before?
Do I need a new tranny?
Should I get rid of my truck?
How's the weather were you're at?
Do you like movies about gladiators?
Oh, sorry, scratch those last two. This is what happens when you're on disability and don't get out. :L: :P: :W: :C: :cry

Thanks.

John

I had that same problem with my tmaxx. It used to get me uptight too. If you adjust the tension on the slider. Not sure what it is called. Tighten it up just a little and it will help. Hope this helps. If you are rolling it will work most the time for me. You can't roll in the bush though. :)

Well coolhand, I had allready adjusted the rod/slider that you were talking about prior to you mentioning it. So I checked it again just to make sure and re-adjusted it. Then wouldnt you know it, I took it out to test it, made a couple of passes, and before I could test the reverse, it stalls.....and wont restart.

Now I have another problem, it still wont start. I checked the glow plug and it looked fine. So I grounded the glow plug on the side of the engine to see if it would glow, gave the EZ-start a workout for about 15 seconds and no glow. So I put in a new glow plug and still no glow. Then someone tells me that there is a chance that my EZ-start wand is bad. So I bought a new wand and the glow plug still isnt glowing. Now I am in the process of changing the wiring harness to see if that is the problem. Sheeesh!

I'll let you know if that was the problem when I get it installed, but if you have any sugestions, please let me know, because I have no idea where to go from here if the harness doesnt work.

Thanks.

Okay! I was talking about the little finger looking ordeal that come out of the slider. I don't know the name for them. If you tighten the allen screw up a little bit it helps. It is inside the trans. On the out put shaft. You have the slider and the foward and backwards gears on the shaft. You need to adjust the little fingers type things in that area. I would use names but not sure what it is called. Tight the screws up a touch so it don't come out as easy. What happens is that the part is out and it won't pull the slider back to reverse. Sorry if confusing you. I had same problem back in the day on my tmaxx as well.

Oh, inside the tranny. Allright, I'll pull it apart and see what happens.
Thanks coolhand.

Coolhand, do you mean the shift fork?

Work because i gotta, play because i wanna

People here hate Nitro, I love it. I start it, run it about 50 ft from me and it dies, I go after it. Perfect exercise

Not the shift fork. The slider the shift fork is on. The front and back gear has the catcher on it. Don't know what you accually call it. Like one the second gear in a two speed tranny for the tmaxx. You have to tighten the screws up some the rpms have to come up more to catch. It has been a while since I had mine. I found it the traxxas out put gear. This is what you have to adjust.

If you can get the idle low enough, the truck should shift. This is one thing I almost forgot about on the t-maxx. Mine all have the forward only conversion.
For the glow plug, John-forget about the EZ start glow igniter and get yourself a real igniter. The EZ start igniter will forever give you trouble.

The idle was actually one of the first things that I did to try and fix that problem. I've got it down as low as I can get it without it stalling all the time. I'll take the tranny apart and tighten that screw up that coolhand was talking about and see if that helps.

When you say to get rid of the EZ-start igniter, do you meen to get rid of just the blue wire that goes to the glow plug and use an igniter instead? Or get rid of the whole EZ-start all together?
I really like using the EZ-start so if I can keep that and use an igniter I'd have no prob with buying one if I'm going to keep having problems.
Thanks.
