Power Supply for charger

I need a power supply.. I always just used a car battery for my ICE charger. I am buying a Hyperion 0610i Duo charger. I ran across this in a catalog we have at the shop.. I wonder how long I could charge a battery without having it plugged in? I think this would work wouldn't it? lol

I'm not sure how well the item you linked to would work, but I would like to suggest converting a computer power supply to use to power your battery chargers. I converted a $14 500 watt one and I use it for my A123 charger and sometimes my Duratrax Digital Piranha charger too. It's great, works wonderfully, and was very cheap. There's a lot of good how-to's out there. I just came across this one. I would suggest looking around for a cheap, high wattage, off-brand power supply to use, since chargers aren't as picky about their power as computers are.

If you're giving a 12vdc batt a lot of heavy use, what you linked won't be a good replacement. A deep cycle marine batt would be better and give both longer and better service. I know some plane guys that fly a lot and they've tried something similar to that on a lark and it didn't hold up long.

If you're only using one accassionally, it might work out. That power center is intended for occassional use. Steady use - they don't seem too last long.

There's a lot of purpose built PS out there. I use a 20a ProPeak and a 12a Victor - the ProPeak will run both my Ice and 0610i chargers easily though.

I just bought a 40a power supply as I couldn't have been bothered searching for a PC power supply that could put out enough juice. I have stacks of smaller PC power supplies that work great with the 50w chargers but they do die every now and then.

In all honesty, unless you happen to have a couple PC PS units laying around, you might as well get an actual power supply. Even if you find a decent PC power supply that will put out enough current while maintaining a solid 12v (they usually drop when running at full tilt), the bother of doing the necessary mods might not make it worthwhile.

The one I found and ended up buying was AU$140 which is almost US dollars these days and puts out 40amps at 13v which is enough to run 2 big chargers I think. It was still a lot more then a PC psu but it is hard to find them with a single high amp 12v rail.

40A @ 13v is 520w. Even with a charge efficiency of ~80%, that's still 416w - enough to charge a 10s pack at almost 10A. Many of those "real" units have an adjustment to tweak the voltage. You could get more out of it (and increase efficiency) by upping it to around 14.5v, which is very close to a running car. I tweaked my Astron 25A unit to 14.75v like this.

I have thought about that but the PSU hasn't been 100% reliable so I may wait a bit longer before modding it. After turning it on the first time it turned itself on and off a few times but has been OK since but I haven't really put it threw to much stress yet.
