I know this question has been asked many times but im still unsure of which MM or all of them are capable of running 5s lipo. My MM has a mod1 done with big caps, fan and everything but my question is which version of MM can run 5s lipo? there is one with 3 casing screws and newer one with 2 screws. I got the older one with 3 screws. What happend with I just plug it in? does it just smoke (dont want that) or have some kind of overvoltage protection that won't let you use it? The motors I have are Feigao 8XL, Neu 1515 1Y and 1.5D, and if 5s is possible on my MM, which motors would be best to use with what gearing as far as overheating to esc/lipo/motor is concern? This is for the Traxxas E-Revo by the way.

It's a bit of hit and miss. there's no way to tell because is really pushing the limit of the electronics. The MM is not rated for 5s, but some will have components that are on the higher end of the tolerance range and are just lucky to handle it.

I wouldn't try it, I've read of plenty of people who's MM has let out the smoke just plugging in a 5s pack, even with the 'mod1' that artur does (I think DickyT or Blacked out revo come to mind... one of them). Then again, I've also read at least one account of people successfully running 6s.

They are rated to run 12 cell nickle based packs, and assuming they reach a full charge of 1.5V (Which is a very extreme estimate, I think I've only ever seen one of my nimh cells this high after a charge, and it wasnt for long). Then 12*1.5 = 18V. 5s lipo on full charge is 21V, which is significantly higher. I've heard a lot of success stories from people who can adjust the CCCV setting on their charger so it doesnt take it right up to 4.2V, or people who discharge them a little before plugging it in.

Yep, i have to discharge mine a bit to get the esc to arm.. Ptt81... THE search function is your freind, there are more then 5 threads asking this same question

I would say those Neus are def out w/ 5S on a MM (way too many amps), and the 8XL can be done if you are careful. Really for what you've got I would just get a MMM. The 1515 2.5D is the largest I'd safely go on a MM on 5S

I run a 1512 on 5s with a modded MM all the time. The main issue you will run into is getting the gearing low enough to avoid heat issues. The motor will want to spin much faster than the gearing will allow. I put truggy diffs in my buggy and it helped a lot.

I guess I won't be going with the 5s MM route for now as I dont want to blew it again, already did doing the mod1 first time...hehe. I ran 4s mostly anyway and I thought it was already way too fast as my E-Revo keep rolling over as I hit the brake. I thought I could use 5s for off-road bashing, I'll get MMM later as im broke now after having to buy two MMs and upgrade to DX2.0. Btw, I got the real e-revo so no mech brake here.
