MMM v2 Success / Failure Poll - 09.01.2008, 08:57 PM

I consider myself to be a seasoned RC Enthusiast and someone who has been online using forums for years yet I'm confused about the current state of the MMM v2. I know that online, people generally speak the loudest when they have a complaint. It's human nature to want to share a bad experience while countless other good or normal experiences go without comment. So I suppose it is possible that for every person who complains that their MMM v2 has failed, there are 10x, 20x or more people who have it work normally.

So I wanted to create a simple poll to tally the three possible outcomes, it is working normally, it has failed and a third category, it has failed and did so in a dangerous manner. After waiting way too long I have my MMM v2 and I have run it to test my wiring and such but I'm concerned about the posts with charred units and potential units on fire. My MMM v2 is mounted millimeters away from my LiPo pack and I don't really want to see anything violent happen if mine were to fail. If you post a comment, I'd ask you to keep it simple. You can create a new thread with photos of the gore. I just want to know if it works or not and if there is a potential safety concern.

Personally I'll be scoring my vote on Saturday after my MMM v2's first Race Day. I figure 4 packs through it and I should know if mine works or not.

Where is the "Working normally, with mods" option? I know, I know, you just want stock ESCs...

Funny tho as your avatar has "no fans" but mods are necessary for the esc to work right? I'd leave it as works out of the box or doesn't

This is a great idea. But you might want to link to this from just the brushless forum since most here are probably looking at problems with their controllers.

Out of 4 MMMs I have one failed V1 with the BEC issue, and 2 V1 working normally with minor mods, and 1 V2 working normally with minor mods.

EDIT: I want to add that every single fan has failed on every MMM untill I completely cut the grill out of the top of the case. After doing that the fans seem to last forever.

I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

I don't follow. My avatar reflect my distaste for fans, which I feel are not needed in a proper setup.

The mods are an attempt to keep these MMMs working until the real fix is out. I mod all my stuff for what I feel should have been done right at the factory. This means removal of fans, adding the necessary heatsinking, circuit mods, etc. It's served me well so far as I've never burnt an ESC or had one go bad.

Whether to mod or not (and how far to go) is up to the user. I personally don't care if the mods void the warranty because I got it very cheap. If I paid full price, I'd probably not want to mod it right away either. But, the mods I've done seem to keep it working, and it's a V1. Another member has done the same and his seems to be working too (so far). To each his or her own I guess.

I don't force anyone to do it. On the contrary, I try to dissuade people with disclaimers and making them aware of the worst case scenario.

Huh? what do heatsinks do - dissipate heat from a component.
what do fans do - help dissipate heat from the heatsink.

Whats wrong with that?

Sorry for off-topic, but all these threads are going round in circles now anyway. The poll is a good idea though.

Thought I mighta been one of the lucky ones. Guess I am since nothing melted, but the MMM simply stopped working after about 8Ah of use.

The previous post is what makes these polls inaccurate. It happened on the V1 failure poll too. People post that it's working fine and the next day it broke. Mine is working fine after 1 hour of use, but I'm not going to answer the poll until I have a couple more hours on it.
