Traxxas Slash motor choice question -
09.03.2008, 11:22 PM
OK, i've fall in love with this truck, and i want to put it brushless. I'll run my MM on 3s.
Please is somebody here could tell me which are the best motor for this truck (Kv rating)???
And if somebody have already one at home, can you tell me the exact lenght of the baterie box??
Because i've Thunder Power Extreme V2 5000 mAh, 3s, and it's on the long side, 150mm if i remember.
Thank you!

I run a hacker 12s motor, which is somewhere around 3000kv. I have also run a feigao 12s, and have a vxl motor to try out, it is 3500kv. I feel that somewhere between 3000-4000kv is perfect for 3s lipo. I have run plett maxx and hacker c50 maxxx motors too, but you have to have the flm tranny as the motors are too big in diameter to fit the stock tranny case. A medusa 50mm motor would be fine, if you get the 1/8 shaft models you can use the cheap 48p and 32p pinions...
I actually ran the hacker and plett in your hyper-pede... Need to get that truck back together again...

OK Linc, but i've a lot of 32 pitch, 5mm bore pinion, so can i run a 58T Jato 32 pitch spur, and go with a Medusa 50mm??
Is the motor will fit the stock tranny and i can mesh it properly?
Thank you
Ho just another think, is the Medusa 50mm motor is about the same diameter as the Feigao 12s?
And if i take a Feigao, sould i take the "s" can or the "L" can??

yes your battery will fit no problem i know 165mm batteries even fit, and id go ahead and get an L can if you get a feagio, i really like my 9L on 3s, gear it for 45mph and no temp problems and runs like a bat out of hell. the medusa 50 is also a good choice just make sure you dont get a motor with too high a KV as gearing down is somewhat limited.

Thank you Rootar, the 9L was on my first choice.
Glade to ear that my TP pack will fit
And should i chance the gearing for the Jato 32 pitch???

On BrianG rc calculator, with a Medusa 50mm, 2200Kv, on 3s, geared with jato 32 pitch 22/58, with 4.4 inch diameter tire, it's arround 41m/h.
So why to go with a 3000Kv motor on 3s???

So you can run lower gearing. I used to run 15/58 gearing in my pede with the 12s feigao.
I did run 18/58 with a 9l, plenty of power and good temps too.

This was my next question, which Neu motor to get, 1509 or 1512, so you reply before i post
I realy considere a Neu 1509 in the 2700 Kv.
But tell me please, which is better on 3s: a lower Kv motor with a bigger pinion or an higher Kv motor with a smaller pinion
Or both is as good?

Personally a 3000-3500 kv motor on 3s is my choice. That puts you between 33k and 40k rpm max. That would be for a smaller motor like a 50mm medusa, neu 1506, or a feigao s can, or the vxl motor. The smaller pinion will decrease the load and the higher rpm will make up for it. Plus it will start from standstill easier, due to the lower gearing.
A larger motor, like a feigao l can will have more torque, and will pull higher gearing. Seems like a 9l on 3s is a great setup for a pede/rustler. Plenty of power, and not really sensitive to gearing. Plus they run cooler. And it is cheap...
If you go with a high quality motor like a neu, or even the medusa, a smaller motor will be fine. I just generally try to keep the rpm somewhere around 35k...

Depends. Either way, you want some options for gearing. If you start off at the max or min gearing possibility, you don't have any room to go further.
Generally, on the good motors, I kinda like getting a faster spinning setup and gearing down. Since each motor revolution is moving the vehicle less (and doing less work), the ESC seems to have an easier time locating rotor position at slow speeds.

Ok, suppose i go with a Feigao 8L (3072Kv) on 3s li-po, and i gear it with 32 pitch Jato gear, 58/14 for a mild 39 m/h, is i'll be able to mesh the gear properly?? is the 58/14 will allow me to push the motor against the spur without interfer on the tranny case???
Thank you

10l should be fine, I ran one in my crt.5 on 3 and it did well.

The 9L and the 8L was out of stock at Impakt rc, it's for this reason i've take the 10L. The 9L was in stock at Offshore electric, but i had need some 32 pitch pinion, so i was better to take all the stuck at the same place.
If i don't like the 10L, for $59.99 it's not a big waste
