Is this a dead MMM? - 10.17.2008, 06:42 PM

I just finished up my Mugen XR conversion using a MMM v2, Medusa 2000kv, and a 5s Zippy lipo. Took her out just now and after a high speed pass the buggy locked up and would not go again. The steering servo stills works, MMM powers up and fan comes on for a second but then the red LED comes on. I cannot get it to power the motor. I tried reprogramming the MMM to Auto-Lipo instead of 16v and still nothing. My lipo shows 20v. When they die do they die completely or does my case sound like a dead one?

Weird. The fact the steering still works and the esc powers up makes me think there is another issue somewhere; usually the esc dies a silent death and nothing will happen when you try to power it back up, or the leds will flicker a little then it dies. Does the manual mention what the solid red led indicates? If the esc is recognized by castle link to let you reprogramme it, then it might be a radio issue (try recalibrating it or re-binding the rx to the tx if its a digital radio).

It is recognized by Castle Link. I re calibrated it to my radio. It now turns green, yellow and red when moving the trigger but still no power. There is also no audible tone anymore. I put an old VXL motor in with the 3.5mm bullets into the 5.5mm bullets and nothing worked still. I also put the steering servo on channel 2 to verify it was working.

What radio are you using?Check you motor wires. The audible tones go through the motor.

I would look closely at the motor wires and connections between the esc and motor because as stated above the tones come from the motor.

I am pretty sure its all connected from briefly checking it over, but will check again tommorow. Even if it was missing 1 phase, shouldn't it still cog and try to go? And if the problem was in the motor, wouldn't hooking the old vxl motor to it make it work? Or would the small contact of 3.5mm to 5.5mm bullets make that not work at all?

Using mismatched plugs could be a serious issue- either hard wire it or use the same sized male & female plugs. Sure its not in brushed mode or something?..

It is not in brushed mode, I just checked. I checked over all the wires today and they look fine. I tried another receiver, still no luck. I am going from the 6.5mm bullets at the speed controller to castle 5.5mm bullets to the motor because I couldn't find the 6.5mm bullets in stock anywhere. I was just touching the the VXL motor with the 3.5mm bullets into the 6.5mm bullets directly on the speed control to see if I could get any kind of tone or movement from in to see if I could eliminate my Medusa from the equation. When I hit the throttle, the LED turns green but also blinks yellow, same when I hit the brakes, red and yellow. Is this normal? I don't know whats wrong with this thing, but from changing trying another battery, another motor, and another receiver, I suspect the problem lies in the ESC. Just very strange that it still powers up and links through castle link.

Just call CC on Monday AM and see what they say... They should be able to give you some information based on the Lights, etc...
At this point.. What do you have to lose?

Sounds to me like the motor locked up.

As for the 2nd motor.... You need to get a proper connection if you want any hope of it working. Get rid of the mismatched plugs and direct solder it if you want to test it. It sounds like the esc is doing what its supposed to do, but the motors arent.

I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

Silent...But Deadly

Well I had some extra time today so I unsoldered all my 5.5mm bullets, and direct soldered the castle wires to a known working Medusa 3300kv. Plugged it in, powered it up, and still the same problem. So it looks like this is a problem with the ESC, and not the motor. It sure did die in a strange way. I will be sending it back tomorrow.
