Losi MRC to Scale Unimog - 01.23.2009, 02:38 PM

Basically this project started out with a unimog body with the losi MRC and an L-trail scale chassis I got from a guy at rccrawler. MY original intention was to make a waterproof scale truck but a little has changed.

First the body that came with it had a paint job which was jacked up on one side. I tried sanding it down and fixing it but still was not happy so I have scrapped it (have some ideas for it still though. I also had built a bed out of styrene to fit the stock wheelbase but was not happy with the length for a unimog. To me a unimog should be short and stubby.

So now I have a new unimog body and will use the waterproof electronics for another scale vehicle as this one is too light to do what I want. I have shortened the wheelbase of the MRC by about 1" and cut off the shock mounts. I will now mount the upper shock to the wheel well of the unimog chassis. I will have some good pictures up later but here is a pick of the body I am using (which will be painted a different color) to give an idea of the look. It's a dump bed too which I am tempted to rig to a servo.

I also plan on LED's in the light bar and giving it a rescue truck theme.

Looks cool, what wheelbase do you think it has after shortening it? My blackfoot came in under 10"...

I do like the unimog body, something different.

Real pics of progress.

However not some changes. The way it is now is just a mock up, I plan to lower the suspension some more, and get rid of the springs and do a droop suspension. The mounting is proving a little tricky, however, I think I have it figured it.

8" It's short and stubby, just like a real mog.

Too cool! I like the little mog! Can't wait to see what it will look like when you get the body lowered a bit.

I got the body lowered about 3/4" or so. I have the ladder frame screwed directly to the toy chassis in front but am still working out the rear mounting. So far progress is good, I just need for my servo mount and saver to arrive from stormer since I got shafted on ebay.

I'll throw up some pictures once I have the rear mount worked out.

Progress pics. Lowered and rear mounted along with front. However rear still needs adjustment.

This one to show the chassis attached to the frame of the truck.

So on to colors. I couldn't quite decide and my wife suggested metallic orange. It seems not to fit at all so I though metallic orange it is. Off to the LHS tomorrow to pick some up now. Hopefully my parts arrive early next week and I can get this thing running. Gonna pick up a GI Joe figure or the like for a driver and install some windows and put the interior in tomorrow or Monday.
