Hey guys, just finishing up on this as a 1/8 brushless.

I have:

2 * Reedy 5000 mah 20C Hardcased Lipos
DX3R radio
MMM ESC V3 (after the Quark 125b fried during basic programming)
Medusa 36-60-2000 motor
Futaba 9551 Servo (8.8kg)

Does this all sound sufficient? Is the servo enough? Am I pushing the limits of Amp draw for 4s? The gear mesh being metal on metal (14t pinion and stock diff) sounds like a rusty chain saw, should I put a dry-lube in there?

Took it out for a quick 2-3 min up the drive n back, Motor got to 108 degrees, ESC and Batts still at Ambient, had the 14t on, sounded very loud from the mesh, is there a trick to gearing these Mod 1's? It seems most people run the 8XL / 9XL on 4s with the 13/14 pinions, being the Medusa should I bump up to 15 or 16?

Steel pinion with steel spur will make noise, especially coupled with a motor like a MedUsa that has such a powerful magnet (hence the notchiness in it). Perfectly normal.

What are your temps like after the run? If your temps are all good you could step up a tooth or two if you want.

The steering servo is sufficient if it works for you. If it turns too slow get something with more torque and a faster time. I have a Hitec HS-985MG and it's more than enough servo for my Hyper 7.

Settings on the MMM are up to you, but you could turn up the punch control a little to keep amp spikes down and make it more drivable. I usually run normal timing on 4 pole motors, lowest on 2 polers.

I've found that for some reason the Losi pinions are a little quieter than the other brand pinion's.

Ok well I mucked around a bit with it tonight

Forgive the cable ties, need to find a decent battery and esc mount.

Also picked up the 15 and 16 pinions, all Novak ones (are they particularly noisy?)

Should I go to 15?

I think you should pick up some of the Kyosho plastic spurs for your center diff here off RCM. They run very quiet, and I've never stripped one. RCM also sells the nice Mod 1 pinions.

I tried looking but I could not for the life of me find them, any chance someone can point me in the right direction?

Also on the RCM pinions, I tried them on the E-Savage (32p) and on the Medusa shaft they simply would not slide on, every other 5mm pinion I had (Kershaw, Novak) would but not the RCM, even with some rubber mallet encouragement, so I am a little iffy on their pinions fitting the medusa shafts easily.

About the pinions - 5mm is 5mm so I have no idea why you're having trouble. I've never heard of anyone having this challenge. Sounds like the wrong size.

Ok thanks, Novak says their pinions are hardened so they "should" work with the metal spur? Not sure how noisy it should be though.

Well after a run today I have settled on the 15t pinion, after 5 minutes motor was at 110f and the ESC and Batteries still at air temp.

Had a strange issue of losing mesh, thought it was a pinion coming loose ended up being the motor coming loose as the position of it doesn't allow you to tighten things that well, set my mesh then removed the mount with the motor in it and used Traxxas VXL motor mount screws with the flanged head and some blue loctite. Also noted a smaller screw holding the mount in (6mm long?) was allowing flex there so replaced that with a 10mm

Need to find a decent battery tray, any ideas?

Yes, I run the 44t on mine. You have to slightly modify the holes, but not much at all. Just a small round file will do. I've had mine on for over a year and never a drop of leaking.
