Medusa 60-2000 vs. 60-2200 for 1/8 Buggy - 03.10.2009, 07:26 PM

From what I've read on the various forums, Medusa 60-2000 appears to have plenty enough motor for 1/8 buggy and enough speed when geared-up even for the larger outdoor tracks with 175-200 ft straights. Any particular reason to consider the 60-2200 motor instead?

The 60-2000 appears to be the Medusa of choice for buggies, but then I suppose it has been available longer. I've seen where suggested Medusa V2 36 series motors for this application only included the smaller 50-2200 and the 60-2000 but those recommendations probably preceded the release of the 60-2200.

Generally speaking, considering typical gearing options and adequate ESC on 4S LiPo, is it fair to say on 4S , the 2000 is good for about the 30-45 MPH range while the 2200 is 35-50 MPH range? Can we draw the conclusion then tha the 2000 is adequately suited for short and large tracks wherease the 2200 may only really be suited for larger tracks and bashing? Is it even worth discussing as any differences in run-time, torque/speed, or reliability of either of these motors geared for 40 MPH for use on 1/8th scale tracks be negligible?

Go with the 2200. That extra little bit of speed is going to be better than gearing up, easier on the system from what I've noticed.

Either will work, which is currently in stock? I would personally go with the 2200 motor and gear down a bit...

It's going in a Caster EX-1, stock gearing is 44 spur, 13t pinion with 43/13 gearing ont he diff. Apparently Caster is so new that there can be some production variation with respect to where the front chassis brace is located, limiting how far down on the pinion one can go. There's one guy who was able to fit a fat Castle 2650 in there with a 12t pinion (barely) yet someone else could only fit a 15t. Yeah that's pretty sloppy on the tolerances I would say. I think the EX-1 is a fairly elegantly designed chassis being thought-out as electric almost from the ground-up but perhaps some cost savings on the production end shows in the end product. In any case since stock is 13t I would hope the worst case variation would still allow going down to an 11t, especially with a 36mm dia Medusa motor. Plus a 46 spur now comes on the Pro version of this buggy so that can allow for some options. 60-2200's are available...Impakt has them for sure, and out of stock pop-up doesn't show on RC-M.

I usually run 13/48 or 14/48 on my 8ight with the 60/2200 motor and have great results. So if you run 12/44 or 13/44 that'll put you very close to (what I think is) an ideal gear ratio.

Thanks for the input...I'm getting this buggy together primarily so I'll be able to run something other than just 1/10 truck at Barona. I have only been out there a few times since it is hard to justify the drive out there and an entire day spent just for a little practice and three 5 minute runs in 1/10 truck! Would like to give ARC a try as well.

You definitely need to come out to ARC. I didn't know you were in the San Diego area. All of us Tekno guys race at ARC all the time, you'll be in good brushless company :)
