Lipo issue - 03.27.2009, 10:35 PM

Here is the deal. My buddy on his rustler ran his Polyquest pack. He then ran my PQ pack, 2s 30c 5000mah. It is fairly new maybe 15 cycles. Shortly into the run it acted as the LVC kicked in but did not shut the truck down completely. It just ran low on power. First thing I thought was it was his VXL ESC. My pack was fully charged. Got it home put it on the Hyperion and the voltage was about 4.15 and the cells were in perfect balance. Topped it off which took about 20 minutes which I thought was odd. Tried running it again in his truck and same thing. Red light on his VXL ESC was blinking red. Unfortunatley I was unable to try it back in my truck due to breaking a rear bearing carrier. What does this sound like? I figured if it was a bad cell it the pack would be way out of balance or not take a charge. Connections on the battery leads are all good. Ideas?

it is the thermal protection on the vxl esc kicking in. if i have my rustler geared too high and i run in grass or sand, the same thing happens to me. just gear it down a little and your problem will be solved.

The VXL lvc is junk. There has been countless cases of them kicking early. I have 2 of them. Both will hit lvc in less then 5 minutes. Voltage on the pack will still be over 12v .1 worked fine at first, then slowly started kicking earlier and earlier. The other never would run lipos correctly. I turn the lvc off, and keep my handy dandy voltage monitor at hand.

I thought maybe it was a thermal issue as well. But then we tried it when the truck was sitting for a good hour. Plus the ESC was cool even after hard runs. Asheck I would agree it could be the LVC. However, we both run the same exact pack and his will not do it only mine. That is the odd thing about it. Right when it happened I too thought it was his VXL ESC. So I told him to throw a charged pack in it to rule out whether it is battery related or ESC. If it was my pack though you would thing my voltages would be way out of whack when I plug it in to my Hyperion. I guess the only way we will find out now is once I get my Rustler fixed (broke a rear bearing carrier, got RPM ones on the way), then we will know for sure.

Did you try to turn the lvc off? What about your connectors? If you have a bad solder joint or something, perhaps that is messing with the voltage readings the esc is seeing.

No we did not try to turn off the LVC. Connections on the traxxas connector are fine. I know his ESC was kind of acting up though it seemed. At one point he could not turn it off with the button. Another time he could not get it to turn on.

Well I got my Rustler back together and had a chance to run the pack (Polyquest 2s 5000mah 30c) in it. It seems low on power in comparison to my SPC 2s 5000mah pack. However, the cells balance perfect and it charges just fine. What could be the possible cause? I am just shocked due to the fact this is a 30c pack and the SPC is a 15c pack. I bought the pack used from a reputable member on a forum. According to him he had about 6 cycles on it. I then put about 6 more on it. Always balance and charged on a Hyperion. He had a Duo and I have a net.
