Would a VXL Rustler handle Maxx rear wheels?

I have an original Traxxas Rustler here just begging to be modded.

If I install the VXL Transmission and Driveshafts, will it hold up to the larger 5.75" Maxx tires and wheels in the back?

I'll have to get the wheel adapters.

I've already upgraded to the RPM bearing holders.

I'm thinking a truck like this would be alot of fun to play with. Maybe with a Medusa 36-60 on 4S?

Just wondering what you guys think.

I already have the MIP cvd's. I'm gonna have to go back through and locktite everything with em. There's a loose pin in one of them, but I'm sure I can fix it.

The only thing I didn't really like about the Rustler was, it didn't get much traction. The Maxx tires should change that for sure.

i've done this mod a long time ago, so i've got some experience with this one. if you use anything but flm cvds, the mips will snap like twigs right at the cups. also, if you do this mod, you can rip the planetaries to pieces almost every run because they are not meant to operate with the sheer weight of the wheel/tires. you can counteract that by loosening the slipper, but it will smoke to the point of actually starting to burn if the slipper isn't locked....again the rusty slipper is not meant to function with tires that big.

here's the only combo i found that worked:

FLM cvds with flm's new adapters so they fit the 6mm axle
a locked diff (either get the spool diff sold from HR or fill the inside with JB weld)
lock down the slipper as hard as you can and then back it up with another nut on the shaft. i also had to go to e-maxx black spriings for better suspension. here's an early picture of it:

OK, I see the cvd's on flm's website, but where are the adapters you mentioned?

How much bigger are the Stampede Tires than the Rustler Tires?


Maybe that's the way I need to go.

Stampede tires are about 15mm taller.

sorry it took so long to get back to you...i must have gotten side tracked with something before i answered and then forgot to respond.

you can either use the slash or the extended/rusty adapters....if you're uising the E-maxx sized tire/wheels, I would use the extended adapters

you need to lock the diff because well, in my case with the amount of voltage i was putting out, it would turn to liquid even with putty. it needs to be glued or locked with a spool.


FYI...if you get the flm cvds, you must run the wide rear a-arms too.

I had a similar project, but never could make it bullet proof. Just to much tire, even using truggy tires. I ended up going with 30 series badlands, and have been happy with them.

silly putty works great for locking the diff. i personally like to use just really thick grease, but that will work too for completely locking it out. Stampede tires are noticably larger then the Rustler ones, but they have horrible tread. IMO, if you're really looking for the larger tires look I'd go with some moabs or masher 2000's. it will require no work, have great traction, and not weigh the truck down too much or put too much strain on the motor. Although the maxx tires is a cool idea, I think it's a bit too much. At that point you lose the Rustlers handling and what was a zippy truck has now turned into almost a truggy?

I just put some Proline Flat Iron's and 2.2 proline beadlocks on my rustler. They look to be the same size as the stampede tires. They have turned this thing into a wheelie machine. Lots of traction.

So quick question...

Is one of the hexes a 5mm hole and one a 6mm hole? Example front-5mm Rear-6mm?

Because I bought the FLM extended dog bones and axles and they enlarged the rear axle from 5mm to 6mm. therefore would need the center hole enlarged as well...

So are they like that? or do you have to run stock slider shafts and axles?
