Savage X conversion thread - 04.23.2009, 11:53 PM

My Savage is going to under-go a conversion here soon... Just bought a 2075kv motor. It will run similar to an 8xl, but with a finned can, so hopefully cooler. Got that for $30. I also got some tires for $35. Nitro motor is going on E-bay soon, if I can get anything for it. Just sold my old phone tonight, made $70. My current cash is $70, but I was also planning on selling my rc18 bl, and my Xbox (which I am now debating...)

Thinking of running a plane esc with mech brakes. First thing I will need is a motor mount, a pinion, and battery trays. That is step 2 in the conversion. Looking for thoughts. FLM foward conversion, RCM conversion (both quite pricey), then there is the $30 Kershaw motor mount. Let me know of any others that are out there. As far as trays, Kershaw sells them for $47, but I think I can do better... Anyone know of a place? I need to order a pinion off tower, I am thinking 14/47 should be good.

Then there comes the driveline... I was thinking an all metal 2 speed... If you guys do not suggest that, I will probably just lock the truck in 1st.

Got a few things to put on E-bay. K4.1 star engine, and my stock tires along with my rc18 (p.m. me if you're interested in anything). Planning on a new body, and a wheelie bar from tower as well.

IMPUT APPRECIATED!

Ok, look in my thread for the hv savage. That is about as cheap as a savage can be done. You can cut up an old emaxx chassis (my favorite) or pede chassis for the battery trays. I used a 60amp plane esc for 8s and a 14xl. All of my lipos cost about 110 bucks. Made the mount myself, but the kershaw mount may be your best bet as you motor is larger in diameter than what I used and it will not fit easily inside the tvps and still offer decent gearing options. I used the stock 2 speed, never had any issues with it. I did upgrade to the dual steel disk brakes, that was necessary. And the bellcrank mounted servo saver too, not sure if you have that, it is needed IMO.

Something like a turnigy 100 amp esc, pistix adapter and 4s lipo for your "death toaster" would be good. Hobby City is the best bet for the esc and lipo, and OSE sells the pistix, I think.

Just some feedback for the Kershaw twin motor mount for the savy X. It works well, so well that I forgot to drill the one hole it requires for installation... ... it never flexed enough to ruin the plastic spur using a bunch of various rated motors from 1200kv up to 2800kv (XL size can) on a MMM using 4, 5 and 6s lipo. (respective to each of the motor's max rated RPM capability)

Not a bad mount for the price. I might drill that hole some day.

I use them massive zippy-h lipo's and couldn't find a tray long enough, so I just strap the lipo(s) on the TVP's with velcro cable ties and a bit of thin foam to pad the battery from the chassis.

Bought the 44t metal idler gear and shaft for the flux tranny (HPI p/n: 100905), dropped it into the X tranny, now I don't need the servo brakes and now I have reverse,... I like reverse.

Solid truck, but not too fun at high speed. Better for sprinting, jumping, crashing, and really good at rolling over.

This truck was the cheapest to convert to electric out of all the conversions I've done so far. Gonna bolt on a pair of *cough* titans and an EVX2, pair of 6 cell nimh's, and some old crap Rx/Tx and jump it off the dock into the lake. Slap the paddles on, try to puddle jump it... I want to see how long it will run underwater before it takes a dump.

Cheers.

Only want to do this once!

The 100a 6s plane esc might do well... for $50, and a $30 motor, it's a cheap setup that should get the job done. Still debating mech brakes and reverse...

Just got all the shocks rebuilt, and truck is clean. need to list some items on E-bay hopefully tomorrow!

Right. As long as no one seriously objects to a 100a, 6s capable plane esc, I am good to go.

Got badlands and a finned 8xl on order... The motor should do fine until It goes out. If it never goes out, then I will run it for a long time hopefully.

Should last a decent amount of time with a spare rotor. ;)

Now i need to order trays and a motor mount. Kershaw sells a mount for $30, but it requires some cutting of the stock x chassis, something I am not too sure about... Novak sells a dual battery tray kit: http://www.shopatron.com/product/par...er=S5050/135.0 part number s5050. Looking for the cheapest drop in mount for a Savage x, and battery trays. If i have to upgrade to 4.6 specs, i can.... Not 100% sure yet. Not sure on how i want to go about this. I thought about just getting the truck up to flux specs with the same chassis and setup... But then I figured, that's a lot of money just to get a truck up to another stock truck. So I think i want to do something that will be either nicer, or cheaper then the Flux setup... The X is a little outdated, so maybe get some X4.6 TVP's?

Looking for imput!
