Fighter Jets - 06.05.2009, 09:54 PM

Here are some videos I took while we were doing carrier flight qualifications during the past 2 and a half weeks.

Enjoy!!!!

From the "Vultures Row". It's outside the ship's island 4 stories above the flight deck

Taken inside the flight tower.

Finnster,
That's my off-time after a hard days work :).

rchippie, it takes roughly about a minute to clear the deck for another landing. It takes longer to retrieve and retension the arresting wire than moving the jet away from the landing zone. It sure belong in there too :).

metallover, unfortunately only essential personnel and equipment are allowed on the flight deck during flight ops. I'll get a video of my truck running around the hangar bay and flight deck during one of these days.

This is my first time being stationed onboard a carrier (spent my time on guided missile cruisers, destroyers, and frigates) and all I can say is WOW!!!. Everything is on a bigger scale except for office spaces.

Just googled it, and it appears they were steam powered.

I know it was one of the most attacked or "unlucky" carriers of WWII. It was it by kamikazies and bombs and stuff.

Does anyone else have the theme song from Top Gun stuck in their head now?

That would be so amazing to see all that in person. Very cool vids!

Out of curiousity, and I'm guessing it is ok based on the videos being here, but they allow you to take videos at will and take them off the ship, post them online, etc? There aren't any security concerns or anything? I was just wondering how that works I guess. Thanks in advance, and thanks for the killer videos!

And how did you get to go up in the tower? Are you up in the ranks?

Chachi RC, it's okay to take and post videos as long as it does not contain sensitive or confidential information. These videos are not different from what you see in the History or Discovery channels. It would be different if I took videos of the CIC (Combat Information Center) or any of the nuclear reactor machinery spaces. Majority of sailors serving onboard nuclear-powered carriers have to go through a security clearance check that takes about 6-12 months to complete. Aside from these, a person will also need special clearance to access the reactor spaces.

Metallover, I'm a Chief Petty Officer which is third from the top of the enlisted ranks in the Navy.

Thanks for the compliment guys.
