Looking for Closure Neu/Castle 2200kv - 06.26.2009, 02:24 AM

This all stems from me really not knowing if my castle/neu 2200kv is bad. Im using 48t/16t gearing and I ran 2 lipos packs thru (the engine has less then 1 hour total run time). First was a 4s1p 5000mah pack ran it out and the engine wasnt really all that hot. I then put in the 5s1p and ran it around for a few mins, then stopped it for a few mins, then ran a few mins more. it was so hot that near the end of the pack that my spit would evaporate in just a few seconds 5 or so. Now keep in mind that i didnt run it full bore the whole time it we be run for 5 mins or so then we would let it rest and do something else for a while. I have spent most of my time today here posting and trying to decide what i should do. I ordered a 10t and 13t pinion to have gearing options. Is it safe to say that the engine is TOAST? I just want some def closure lol. I havent ran it since how can i tell its bad?

yes i have made about 15 posts today.

The 2200kv motor really isnt the right motor to be running 5s in a truggy with your current gearing...its really a 4s motor and that's what I orginally had in my rc8t....do you have a temp gun? If you don't you should...I keep my motors around 160-170ish good temps for back toback runs when it's already 100degrees outside....as far as your motor being bad try to run it with the smaller pinions and gear down if you use 5s....you can't expect 16/46 gear in an 8ight-t with a 2200kv motor in 5s to NOT be hot....also try using BrianG's speed calculator... It's helped me out a ton when deciding what gearing I need

yeah, i understand all that. i am strickly a 4 cell guy. i purchased the 5 cell to see what it was all about. Thats when i started to experience the heating up. did you read the post? I just used the 5 cell for testing. i wont be using it again, im staying with 4 cell and moving to a 13t pinion.

Well I don't understand what you are asking here..

you run 2200kv motor with gearing that is way too fast even with 4s. Than you put 5s to the system, made you motor run over 40k RPM and than you are surprised that it was hot..

Use that calculator that is alfa & omega for all of us. Gear it to 60km/h maximum and you will be just fine. For 4s that is 13/14 pinion in your case. Don't run 5s in 2200kv motor ever again and you will be just fine.

i guess what my post is asking is if my MOTOR is shot and needs to be replaced? If so how can i tell that is the case. is running it hot once enough to damage it? Did you read the post? how can u say you dont understand what im asking? its pretty simple.

if it demagged it would get hot very quick or just cogg... If its running like it used to its fine.

Ah... I see now... Well. Try it.

Very high temperatures could demagnetize it and therefore it wont work at all. But maybe you are lucky and it will be fine. Just give it a go and you will see..

if it's toast, buy a 2000kv / 1700kv instead, you will have possibility to run 5s in future if you want to and still gear it to proper speed.

Whoa ...yes I read the post...and and fortunately there is this thing called a search engine that will tell you about Brushless motor problems
..and it would also answer almost all of the other questions that you created threads for....did you not use the search feature? No starting/turning would be number one....then severe cogging that can't be corrected with gearing change would be two...then excessive heat build up on mild gearing and low voltage setups would be third ...and maybe a grinding sound when you rev the motor and the car spools up like a nitro engine and there is Zero torque....anyone one else correct me if I'm wrong....

Hook up another battery and run it shortly and see if it still runs as smooth as it should and see if it heats up really fast (if it gets hot to the touch in just a minute of mild running around the house it's toast).

chances are, it probably wasn't that hot anyway. i know for me, i can touch my 2200 after some good hard speed runs geared 43/25 and the thing feels like it could burn my finger off, but when i hit it with my temp gauge, it's most ofthe time 150-165 degrees.
the point everyone is making is, get a temp gauge. they only cost about $20 and everyone who runs electric should own one.

that being said, if you did overheat it, Arct1k said it best. it'll heat up very very quickly and you'll notice a drop off in speed, and if it's damaged much more than that it'll start cogging as well.

+1. The Medusa in my Muggy was very hot last time I ran it, I pulled my DuraTrax Flashpoint (about $20 on Tower Hobbies) and it read 158 degrees which is the point where I stop running electrics (they're technically OK to higher temps but I'm obsessive about not smoking $150 being stupid).

I agree with what artc1k said, i have ran my 2200 from 4 to 6s. the build quality is high- you would definitely know if something was amiss- as stated, if it runs fine it probably is fine.

If you did not have heat problems with that gearing and 4s lipo you should have the same results if you continue to run 4s lipo. No need to re-gear if your current gearing works fine. If you plan to run 5s again (and you say that you do not) You will need to put a smaller pinion on to adjust for the higher motor speed. I ran a lst on 5s with the 2200 motor and geared for 40 mph it did great. I am sure your motor is fine.

Your problem is definitely in the gearing of the motor on 5s. You're looking at 53-55mph on that setup. Not too extreme but it will heat the motor up faster and shorter runtimes should be used.

With that said, Neu has stated that their motor run most efficiently from 25-35k rpm's. 2200kv on 4s puts out 32,560 unloaded rpms. Thats why they suggested it for a 4s motor.

I've run my 8T with the 2200 combo geared 15/47, unless I miscounted the spur...lol, and she runs long and strong on the track and around the house with great temps. after a 14 minute run, my motor temps out around 155-160 everytime.

One thing you need to look at also, is on 5s, I'm pretty sure there was a lot of unloading of the wheels. When the wheels spin too easy that makes the motor spin more freely and less loaded. Unloaded motor run inefficient and create heat. Might be another reason for your motor heating up.

well i put my 4s pack back in and the temps never went about 140 on the motor and 120 on the ESC and 100 on the batteries. I think i was lucky this time. I ran it for a good 15 mins doing speed runs. I did manage to have one of my tires come off the rim. :) Thanks to everyone for the advice. I am going to gear down to 48t/15t instead of the 48t/16t, just to get the temps down a bit more, think that will do it? again thanks
