Mamba Monster 2200kv Combo - 07.02.2009, 09:20 PM

My questions is this. Does this kit hold up well using the motor braking instead of mechanical? Also what is the max amp draw of this motor and ESC? Also when using engine braking is it normal for the motor to make a buzzing, humming noise when braking?

yes, the really cool sounding "metallic" humming under braking is normal and perfectly fine.

I just got done running my revo with mech brakes, then esc brakes... The electronic brakes are much better, i can make the truckk do a front flip with the motor brakes..

The amp draw for the combo has not been officially released, but spikes of 300a are not uncommon- the esc will handle it fine

Yea esc breaking will most likely pull as much power as your batterys can put out, I did some data logging on a revo and 9 out 10 times the largest spike in current draw is braking, and the logger showed full battery power draw ( zippy 5k 20c) brake spikes where at 100-105A.

Futaba 3pk more controller then anyone person needs

I think you are misreading the graph perhaps - or misunderstanding something. The ESC brakes actually puts power back into the batteries - the opposite of amp draw. This is called regenerative braking. Braking is "giving power back" rather than drawing power from the batteries. Acceleration, particularly from a standstill will cause the largest spikes on the graph. Braking will show as zero current most likely, but with higher than nominal voltage. :)

After you messed with the headache that is mechanical brakes with nitros, electric brakes are a godsend.

Unless you have to have brake bias, motor brakes are great. I run heavy vehicles (like the muggy and lst) with MMM esc and use motor brakes and they both do fine. These are both 6s setups as well. I have tried mech brakes, but it is a hassle to do without a 3ch radio with mixing on the throttle channel, and even then the mech brakes fade and are not as consistent as the motor brakes. I plan to stick with motor brakes on all of my setups, and even on the 5th scale stuff I am building.

Yep- although I rarely use brakes I love my motor brakes on my 12lb truggy.

I love the beautifully metallic sound when my MMM 2200 in my Losi 8ight 2.0 brakes.

Huh thanks mike didn't realize that, I just thout that since the motor is spinning one direction, and you apply brakes, the esc tells the motor to spin the opposite way for a very breif moment in time causing the spike, but who knows my logger may need to be recalibrated for the esc to show propper throttle direction.

I don't have the combo but mmmv3 and 1515 1y, which i guess is basically the same. The beep tones that come out of the motor vibrate through the metal spur and make it sound sick but if I apply pressure to the spur during this process it will sound normal to off key Of course, I do like to play on this

Well im just wondering if its good or bad to run motor brakes? What is happening when the motor brakes engage? the motor spins in the opposite direction? magnets lock it down?

When you brake the ESC essentially shorts out the motor (in a controlled fashion) which causes the motor to act somewhat like a generator. Current flows back into the ESC, and back into the batteries. The motor doesn't do anything fancy in this process, it just slows down.
