Caster EX-1 Plastic Spur - 07.18.2009, 06:45 AM

I have a caster ex-1 but I personally don't like the noise generated by the steel spur gear, and the pinion seems to showing signs of wear. At first I thought a steel spur gear was absolutely necessary, but after noticing my friends RC8e had a composite spur gear I was curious if there was a spur gear that fits the stock different or if there's another differential from another buggy on the market that fits. I'll post dimensions of stock differential soon for those who own other buggies that has plastic spur gears and want to help. :) thanks for reading

I use a kyosho plasic spur on my ex1 but you need mods to get it to fit right.

I'm all ears. Can you do a short write up and possibly the K part number too?

it really is not ment for the ex-1 cd because it uses a 5mm output cup instead of a 6mm like the kyosho. so what i did was cut off the plastic bearing support on the kyosho gear and cut off the ex-1's one and used that its really not that good. im looking for a new diff . possibly the rcm slipper.

You might be better off measuring your differential from bearing to bearing and you might be able to use a center diff from a vehicle that does accept plastic spurs. I have an RC8T that I recently converted over to an associated plastic spur, def a lot quieter! If the associated center diffs will fit they can be picked up for about for about $25 on ebay

RC-Monster RC8T 1515 2.5D/MMM/5s RC-M 4500mah
SC10 MMPro 13.5T 2s NeuEnery 5000mah
RC18T Mamba 25/5400kv 2s lipo + 6s NiMh

Stock Caster diff is about 33mm with the bearings, the RC8 diff is ~32.85mm and both use 8x16x5mm bearings. Looks like there is a drop in solution for plastic spur gears.

Smart diff will not fit in the Mugen so I doubt it will fit in a copy of a Mugen.

Actually you could make it fit but the outdrives are too short, Mugens are way longer. I also thought about swapping internals but the outdrive shafts are different sizes.

yeah the caster is just a downgraded copy of a mbx5 . so no smart diff? oh well.

Confirmed, the rc8 center diff with 46t spur is direct fit for the caster EX-1.

Update: 48t spur is slightly too large to fit and interferz with the main chassis plate. However u can add four M3x3mm washers to raise centre diff mount to make it work.
