any plastic spur gears that fit the crt x2? - 03.16.2010, 01:35 AM

anything between 45-48t that will fit is what i'm looking for. the truggy has a 48t right now, but it only geared for 38mph with a MMM 2200kv combo, so there is a little room for gear changes.

i am sick of shredding pinion gears. the longest i've had one last is 15 battery packs in my buggy (now has plastic spur) the longest i've had one last in my truggy is 5 runs. even the rcm gear i bought was wearing pretty bad until it broke.

i don't exactly go very easy on my driveline, but i have yet to see a pinion last very long when coupled with a steel spur. i ordered a dynamite gear that has teeth shaped more like a clutchbell, so hopefully, it will fare better. if not, plastic spur is my only option.

brands i have tried so far:
rc-m
robinson racing
hpi racing (surprisingly the best so far as far as noise and longevity go)
some "hardened" gear i got for free with a different motor last year
i'm hoping the dynamite gear holds up. only time (and bashing) will reveal the answer

They say a good mechanic only needs 2 tools - WD40 & Duct tape. If it moves, and its not supposed to, duct tape. If it doesn't move, and its supposed to, WD40.

A Kyosho plastic spur will fit. I don't understand how you manage to shred pinions with steel spur. I had been running my ST RR with a lightened 46T Kyosho steel spur with an RCM 15T pinion since Feb last year and the teeth still looks new. Are you sure the mesh is okay? You have to put a little of play on the gear teeth when you're setting up the mesh.

well, the hpi gear never really wore out completely, i just had to drill the set screw out of it, ruining it. there was some wear though

the robinson racing gear was in my buggy, which has a not so great motor mount that doesn't keep the gear mesh very consistant, so that was also my fault i guess

the other hardened pinion i had wore within 5 runs and everything was good as far as gear mesh goes and it just wore out as if it wasn't hardened well.

the rc-m pinion was wearing out pretty fast until one of the teeth broke off. mike wants me to send it in to get the replacement gear. he's at rcx, so that will take a while

like i said in my last post, hopefully the dynamite gear works good. my LHS's supplier finally has castle creations pinions in stock, so that will be my next choice.

one more thing, i had a associated plastic spur on my matrix and stripped it due to bad mesh from a loose screw. i have a replacement coming in the same order as my pinion gear. maybe if the pinion starts wearing early again, i can just sand down the wide face of the gear (like i had to do for my buggy with the first one) and try to see if it fits.

why do they even use steel spur gears in the first place? it's not like they're saving weight by doing it. i know a lot of the electrics now have plastic spurs, but almost every single nitro buggy and truggy has a steel spur. why?

Steel spurs are more durable than plastics. I ran steel spur because I had it laying around in my parts bin. Like I said, I still have to replace any pinions or spurs since running my ST RR. Besides, I don't wear out my pinions like you do.

The Castle Creation pinions are junk. Unless they changed it to hardened steel, the pinions that came with the combos are made from flimsy aluminum.

I would agree that it sounds like there is another issue if you are going through pinions like that. Something in the drivetrain is causing all that extra wear. If you switch to a plastic spur you might just end up replacing spurs every 5 runs if the underlying issue doesn't get resolved.

i think i figured out the problem. i think my spur gear is worn out. going reverse with my brand new dynamite pinion, the truck is very quiet. it is much louder going forward. i drove backward almost as much as i did forward and the the pinion is only showing wear on the forward side.

i guess i'll be getting a kyosho plastic spur gear pretty soon. hopefully it fits.

i put a associated plastic center diff gear on the truggy and it is very quiet. gear wear is no longer a problem, but there are 2 new problems.

i can't tighten the 4 diff screws without the plastic gear warping

the center diff now leaks all its fluid within 5 minutes of driving (probably from not being able to tighten the gear enough. yes, i did remember to transfer the o-ring and use the gasket that is included with the gear.)
