"new" losi Xcelorin 1700kv - 12.15.2009, 05:02 AM

Hey there,

I used to have a lot of fun with my Losi Xcelorin1700kv on 5s in my Buggy and Truggy. In Europe, the motor is quite affordable (less than €ur 100,-, which is ok for a quality motor), but had one massive problem: the kevlar-bonding of the rotor gets damaged by dirt that gets into the motor by the mounting-holes. I 've fixed the bonding a couple of times with super glue, but finally the bondig got damaged completely. I've sent in the motor for replacement, and last week I have received the new motor.

I have already heard that the newer motors have a rotor with carbon-bonding. Let's have a close look at the "new" motor.

It seems that the blue surface has a better quality than the old one; an other improvement: the screws of the endbells have a better quality. Good to see that Losi reacts on customer complaints. I really like the various mounting holes of the front endbell (M3, M4).

Having a closer look at the motor, you can see a few changes besides the new bonding:

size of the rotor (total size) is about 18,6-18,8 mm; length is 40mm, total lenght is 85 mm. new are the bushings on tha axle. The bearings are both pretty massive. total size of the motor is 39 x 70mm. For cooling purposes you either need the Losi-Heatsink (diameter 39 mm) or you have a fan. I used to have a fan, like that the temperatures have been around 50-55 deg. c/122-131f, sometimes - but not that often - above.

Inside, the motor seems to be the same, 12 slots:

I can't make a statement about Ri or efficiency, but I know that at least the "old one" had a great torque (5s). The Motor has a detent torque, which is not that strong, less than the detent torque of my medusa 3680 1600.

U should put some foam unter the cap to keep the rear bearing free of dust.

I know that many hail motors like medusa, neu; I think, the 1/8 losi-motors are great stuff. A problem might be, that the 1/10 electronics stuff seems to have poor quality, so people think the 1/8 motors are bad, too.

regards

Thanks

I think those motors are under-rated, I don't know so many here in Germany running xcelorins. people like to say "u should go with something proven etc...", and I am sure that these motors deserve more publicity.

I dunno why I should have - for example - a 2200kv motor on 5s (when I go with the mmm set). I really loved the torquey performance on 5s, in combination with the torsen center diff, the buggy was over-powered (which is good ). I have also read, that the carbon motors are running cooler, I don't know if that is true.

Wow, that thing is CRAZY. Are those 8mm bearings? and the shaft is 8mm? , it's the biggest I've seen in 1/8 motors.
PS: this was what it looked like on my computer. Thanks for the awesome pics.

hey Himalaya,

yep, the shaft is about 8mm. The "old" motor didn't have those bushings, the shaft measured 8mm. So this one's diameter is a bit less then 8mm (8mm bearings). The bearing at the front endbell is a standard size, 8x5x16 mm, you get them everywhere. the back one is 8x4x15 I think. in my "old" losi, I 've replaced the bearings with ceramic ones.

I always had to smile, when people talk about the "big" (but actually small, regarding the power) bearings of their Medusas, CC-Neu etc... Mine is bigger, Size DOES matter

cheers

Yes, GREAT shots.

That really looks to be a VERY well made motor.

I've always wondered about them. Now you have me wanting one.

They use really poor screws to secure the front bell of the motor

the scews of the newer models seem ok, the screws of the older motors have been crap, indeed.

Bigger is better in the bearing world. That's part of what caught my eye about this motor.

Between that and the fact, they did follow the Neu Design.

This thread is getting older now. How have these motors been holding up for you?

Just trying to get some longevity comparison.

I had the "old design" motor for I think 1,5 years, or longer. I just loved the performance, but it needed a fan, like that the temperatures were ok all the time. The screws were a problem, so I changed them. I've geared it pretty "long", and the motor performed great. the front bearing is massive and has a standard size, so replacement (8-16-5mm) is easy to get. using m4-screws for mounting the motor also makes really sense. I don't know why other manufacturers don't have such good ideas...

I don't understand why people still go for that boring 2200kv standard cc stuff... they fear that a 1700kv motor hasn't enough power. that's not true, the 1700 offers plenty of torque, which is fun to drive.

the only problem was sand getting inside, so in the end that damaged the kevlar bonding. I have sealed the front endbell, and I've put some super-glue on the (already damaged) kevlar bonding, that worked for another 6 months. then, finally, the bonding was fu...ed. I got a replacement, that's the motor pictured above (with the black carbon-fiber bonding).

at that time, I had changed to a heavy weight truggy, and finally sold the losi, as the heavy truck required a medusa 3680-1600.

so my conclusion is: if you seal the motor-holes to keep the motor clean, a great motor for a buggy and truggys, up to 4,5 kg I would say (my truggy-type of buggy was 4.3kg). I would buy that motor again.
