choosing between 2 lipo's - 07.01.2010, 11:46 AM

hey all,
short question
40C 6s 5000 lipo or 30C 6s 5800 lipo

just looking for runtime here on my 1700kv truggy motor. been running 5s for now, weight doesnt matter, ist only for bashing

doesnt a 30c 6s compares to a 40c 5s?

was leening to the 5800 one, but like to hear you opinions,

oh, price is also about the same.

Well a 6s and 5s are completely different to start off...

But if you are comparing 2 6s packs of different MAH and C rating, a few things to look for. Quality of the packs. Do a search and see which brands seem to be most prevalent and successful.

Next, compare the Amp outputs of the 2 packs. The 5800 30c pack is capable of 174 amps of continuous output if the pack is a true 30C pack. The 5000 40C is capable of 200 amps of continuous discharge if the pack is a true 40C.

Now if you are trying to compare runtimes between a 5s and 6s pack on the same motor geared for the same speed, the 6s pack should be able to achieve the same runtime as the 5s pack while using slightly less MAH due to the increase efficiency of the system.

im indeed aware it will also bring some more power with a 6s. but nothing i cant handle on the local bigscale track.

currently running the same brand as these 2 i want to choose from, so yes they are the same brand.

also my own 5s flightmax 5s 5000 are 30c packs, and so far no problems with the amperage.

so yes, im wondering if a 6s 30c can handle the same as a 5s 40c?

I'd imagine so, you would just need to gear down with the 6s to acheive the same approx speed as with the 5s pack, that would drive up your efficiency and lower the temps on the esc and motor, all ( other ) things being equal. Runtime would increase as a result if you were to use the same capacity & C rating as before ( 6s vs 5s - I'd venture that a lower C rated pack will hit the lvc sooner than the higher rated pack, even with the same mah capacity, depends how hard you push it really ), so for just bashing I'd say get the 5800mah 30c pack,- and a stop watch

thx for the advise so far you guys!

@ neil, yup was planning on gearing down for the benefits you mentioned.

we only have a local bigscale track, the nitro tracks are a bit of a drive to get just for fun, so im sticking with the bigscale track. problem is that the straight is a bit long and i cant really enjoy the speed with my mugen - 5s - 1700kv - 48/15 gearing.
i can if i put on a 16 tooth pinion, but with summer ahead the motor did get a little too hot, and my esc just kicks in with a temp. cut off i think.

i do races also, witch need a whole other setup, but as for bashing, i agree with some of the guys here, just get the lowest kv motor on the hihgest lipo cell that you can find.
so looking forward to the 10s-12s esc from castle.
