Need help picking a small laptop/netbook

I just started college and the need for stable computer has be come present, so I figured I'd ask you guys

I'm not asking for much, I just need some thing that can run Office 2007 and be very portable long battery life and be better than what I'm running now which wont be too hard (1.6? 1.2 ghz 512 40gb hdd) <----and won't break the bank

I have a laptop for sale, battery is dead, needs replacing as does the wifi card. Which I have been using a usb adapter for. It is a dell ispiron, with just about the same ratings as the one you are looking for. Let me know if interested, think cheaply!

Otherwise I would say get a Mac. I have all Mac's now, besides the two PC's I am trying to sell, one of my macs is 5 years old and has no signs of wear. Runs just as good as the day I bought it. You might be able to get a used one of eBay for the cheap. Also see if your school is listed on the apple store so as to get a discount on microsoft student edition.

I have the Acer Aspire One and I love it. Long battery life (especially with the SSD I put in) and does everything I need it to. Only thing I want to do now is upgrade from 1GB of RAM to 2GB.

go on newegg and look for something with something besides a generic vid card, IE: ion, ati 4200, etc

a "netbook" with a dual core and decent vid card can be had for $500ish, and won't be a useless POS

Is that implying that a netbook with the standard Intel Atom CPU and integrated video is a useless POS? IMO if you want a machine capable of playing games, running CPU/GPU intensive applications, etc. then a netbook isn't really the right type of machine anyway. For web surfing, word processing, email, and media playback the Atom and integrated graphics do the job just fine.

Well we have several notebooks in our family of 5 at the moment. First it all depends on what type of budget you are working with, which you did not mention. Laptops are pretty easy to get your hands on these days and for a pretty fair pirce as well. I have had several brands and most of them have been pretty good for the most part. HP's are very good and I have a Toshiba which I am writing on at the moment. This one is a Satelite L655 which carries a 4 hours battery, and Intel Dual core I3 CPU, with all the bells and whistles, which I purchased about a month ago. I paid $700 for it and I am very happy with its performance to date. If you are on a tight budget I would go online and look for a factory refurbished unit. They are like brand new at half the price, but very reliable. I also really like the customer service which HP provides. We have had Dell PCs as well and I just do not like all of the crap they put in the opporating systems and I think their customer service sucks.

Intel or AMD really does not make a difference so to speak, but AMD is merely a copy of Intels technology at a lower price. So once again it depends on your needs and your budget. Apple are good, but not for the price in my opinion. Good luck with your choice sir.

i asked the same question a while back....

i bought a samsung N130 with the 2gb ram upgrade and i love the little thing its become my main computer. battery life it right around 5.5-6.5 hours when running the wifi, start up is instant and i have yet to make it stumble running the full version of windows 7. and i only gave $275 for it....

I have one of those little acers, does what I need it to do, but is very slow on startup for some reason. Once its up and going though it zips around on the internet and whatnot just fine.

Slow start up is usually caused by too many start up processes. If you get into your programs, and look at "Startup" you can see what programs open when your PC is started. What ever you do not need open just delete it from your startup menu.

If you want your laptop to be fast make sure you stay away from anything basic with only one gig of ram. dual core or quad core with at least 4 gig of DDR2 ram will give you the best performance. Acquring one that can max out with 8 gigs of ram or better will give you ultimate performance and speed.

You can also try shooting Arct1K AKA Chris a PM for assitance. He works with Dell and knows a lot about laptops in general. He was the one who put a laptop package to gether for Paralyzed aka Harold a while back. We all chipped in and got him a new notebook when his crashed.

The only caution I would mention for net books is to make sure you know what you are getting - they dont have CD/DVD drives, and some of the software is "dumbed" down versions of the real things.

I've an acer ferrari one and very pleased with it. Battery life and price is downsides but performs fantastic for a netbook

AKA win 7 starter...

find someone with an .edu email and get win 7 pro for $30


I would still suggest looking into something a little larger, notebooks in the 12-13in rang have 2-3x the performance for only a little more.


or you can be like me and get a huge @$$ desktop replacement laptop and play BC2/MW2/ME2 in the lunchroom
