1/5 scale...how close are we?? - 10.29.2010, 01:38 AM

So I have sweated getting into 1/5 scale BL for over a year now and I am wondering, how close are we. To be honest I am not a fan of the brushless Bajas in the handling dept just from footage Ive seen. I did however get pretty excited when I saw that riverhobby BL converted 1/5 scale buggy on here.

I have to say though my biggest ambition is a 1/5 scale truggy....you know something like what RYUjames custom built out of a rampage. But a higher quality upgradeable kit.

I am itching for this next segment of RC to explode. The high cost of Lipos does not scare me and with castle getting closer to their super esc I am getting antsy.

Anybody have any feedback I may be missing in this arena. I feel like we are right on the cusp to this segment cracking open....or am I still dreaming?

You are not dreaming, check out Castle's new 5th scale system.

Should be more than enough power to make you forget all about those gas engines.

Trust me, im right there with ya in wanting a brushless 1/5. I have some pics of one thats still in the testing phase. Last word I got on Monday was January for the release date. If you want them just PM me and I will get them to ya. Its based on a 1/8 buggy layout but just a little bigger to make it a 1/5 scale. I thought I would share this: http://www.bigsquidrc.com/redcat-pro...5-scale-buggy/

I know about the CC advancements that is why I mentioned it. Thats why I really feel we are close.

Will the Rampage MT come converted to brushless?? Also it seems that Redcat thinks it need to be RTR am I correct in the assumption?? I hope not. Maybe they can just make a motor mount for the MT and I can sell off the noisy petrol.

Ive been trying to talk them out of selling the brushless buggy as an RTR. So far I am not having much luck. Ive been telling them that anyone thats interested in one will either already have or already know what lipos/esc/RX/TX they want to use. I dont know if they will be offering a brushless version of the truck, but the brushless buggy could be converted over to a truck with just a few parts. About all it would take would be wheels/tires, bumpers, body and body mounts. Also I can tell you its extremely light compared to any of the other 1/5 scales I own or have owned. The gasoline XT MT(which is the name they are going with for now) is a few pounds lighter than my Nutech Thunderbolt 2 buggy and I bet its 10lbs+ lighter than a Rampage MT.

I don't know that it will explode, but it should grow some. I think the holdback will always be cost. Gas engines are more reliable and cheaper to run than nitros, but they didn't kill off 1/8th scale nitros even for bashing. I don't see how having an off the shelf BL system is going to really change that for a lot of people, when replacement bodies themselves tend to run $150 for 1/5th scale.

I know its been argued that they are tougher and don't need as much work, but someone still having to throw down $1500-2000 just for a basher buggy is quite a scary chunk of change all at once.

They arent nearly that expensive anymore, unless your talking HPI, MCD, and FG. Redcat, Nutech and a few other companies make a very solid 1/5 scale. Even the Baja clones are pretty good.
I do agree with ya though, a brushless 1/5 is not a cheap affair by any means. To get comparable runtimes to a gasser, you'd have to have well over $400 in batteries, and thats using Zippys.
