motor ID/crystal questions

Hey guys, I have a couple of questions and hopefully someone can help me out...

First off, I found this brushed motor. I have not seen anything like it before, and perhaps someone can help identify it, direct me to a datasheet or at the very least enlighten me on how it works so I can possibly use it for something (probably non-RC related, as it's ~20lbs).











I didn't get a photo of the armature, but from what I can work out it's a normal brushed arm but with many many poles (20?). The case of the motor seems to be used as a ground as well. The iron slabs on the case seem to be electromagnets, as they did not attract my screwdrivers even when I touched them directly.

Secondly, this question has to do with receiver crystals. I have a couple GWS micro receivers (R4PII) but the crystals have died. Amain has such an awesome sale on crystals right now that I bought several replacement regular-size crystals for $0.40 each to experiment with, but obviously they are not plug and play into the GWS receivers.



As far as I can work out there is not enough UM-1 size crystal popularity for there to be commercially made adapters. One of the only things I have not soldered before is a crystal resonator. Do RC crystals have enough heat tolerance, or am I better off soldering a socket to the board?

ps. maybe I'm just being dumb but I can't seem to find pcb type crystal sockets for sale anywhere. "crystal sockets", "crystal adapters", "crystal pcb" etc...none of my searches turn up anything. I suppose I could cannibalize some Xmod boards (or DIP IC sockets) but for future reference where do they sell these (and what should my search string be instead)?

No idea about the crystal info, but that motor looks like it could be some kind of starter motor for an old diesel engine. We used to have motors very similar to that one on our ships emergency diesel generators. Most of the time we used pneumatic starters, but in rare occasions battery start motors were used in some of our systems. Anyway that motor looks like It would fit the bill as a starter type motor.

I used to make motors like that, they have various applications but the shaft and end housings usually dictate a specific application. If it was a starter motor there is a lot missing to it as starters generally have a bendix type gear attached, a gear that moves out of the way once the motor starts. My best guess is that it once powered a spall hydraulic pump. That is one of the most common uses for this size dc electric motor.

thanks for the motor insight, guys. I did some looking for starter motor diagrams and it does look extremely similar. The armature seems spot on as well, but the four terminals/brushes aspect is really bugging me. Maybe I'll go tear it apart again with a multimeter this time and figure out what connects where.

Does is definitely a DC motor though right?
