Non RC - Gaming consoles -
12.31.2011, 12:44 AM
Looking for a bit of advice on what gaming console to buy out of PS3, Wii and Xbox 360?
Going to be for the kids mostly - 6 & 8 yrs old.
Don't need internet access, just for playing games bought or hired.
I know the PS3 is Blu ray and the Wii doesn't play normal DVD's.
Wii would be the cheapest but I do not know how the hard drive, lack of, or size impacts on game playing?
I am really a novice when it comes to this stuff.
Looking to buy a DVD player/Bluray as well if I get a Wii all for the second TV donated by my parents(they bought a new one).
Any advise welcomed.
Thanks
Brow

The Wii is a lot of fun with the motion controllers... and the kids actually get a little exercise!

I'm not a full bottle on the technicals but I have kids in that age group. Out of the wii and xbox they use the wii more. The xbox controller is purely for finger use. The wii controller can be used in the same way or swing it 'round like a bat or (with an addtional accessory) as a steering wheel. It just seems more versatile out of the box. I also feel some of the games are more suited to that age group, not too technical. My youngest (4) can use it, if I set up certain games for her.
If you get a dvd player, it will more likely have more features than an xbox or wii can offer.

I own all three consoles and of the three I use the PS3. I bought the PS3 first because it was a blu-ray player, (I thought it was the most versatile) I bought the Wii really for my kids, (but it's fun to play that every once in awhile), and I bought the Xbox really just because I thought it would work better as a media player, ( all the computers in the house are Windows based). All Blu-ray player will play legacy discs (Cd's and DVDs). To be honest I really don't have time to play games that much these days but when I do it's mainly driving games. I really think the Grand Turismo is the best driving game out there. That is another reason I really like the PS3 (GT is exclusive to that console). Hope that helps,
Mike.

Ive got a 360 and a Wii. The Wii is cool, small and yes you get some excercize playing it. I still prefer the Xbox 360, and with the Kinect you can get all the same excercize as the Wii gives you but without having to hold a remote! Graphics on the 360 are hands down the best out of the 3 consoles.
Built Ford tough, with Chevy stuff.

Wii -

We have a PS3 and an XBox 360 because we have 3 teen age kids. Considering that you were asking for reasons of having smaller age kids the WII is the best choice for that age group. Plus the entire family can join in on occasions and have a great time without having to be a genious to figure out all the tricks. After playing with the Wii for a couple of years they will be ready for something more technical like the other two gaming consoles. We do not purchase any of their games for them. This proves to be a great way to teach them how to earn their own money for things they want to play with. Especially with games that can cost anywhere from $30-$75 depending on their level of knowledge and experience. The WII is the best place to start out for little kids. In a couple of years who knows what gaming consoles will be out there. Good luck with your purchase.

I am a teenage kid and I prefer my PS3 to our Wii, for young kids and with more than one player its great (party!) but the PS3's graphics are far superior as is the gameplay, titles available, memory etc... To keep them interested the PS3 will be better in the future and better for adults too

We have all 3 and the Wii is getting sold. Since we have Kinect for the Xbox and the Move for the PS3, the Wii is pretty outclassed IMO. Overall, we tend to prefer the Xbox with the Kinect. It's really hard to beat not having to use a controller at all for the game and the speech recognition feature with the Kinect is downright awesome. You can use it to navigate through all sorts of things and it's quite useful in some games (example: Kinect Sports Two).
FWIW, our 5yo daughter plays Kinect games on the Xbox all the time (Disneyland Adventures, Kinect Sports, Kinectimals). If it were me buying a system that kids would enjoy at the ages yours are, the Xbox with a Kinect would be at the top of my list.

I like my 360 the best, but I'm a 22 year old man that likes to game.
I think a Wii would be great for youngsters, we also have that.
Haven't tried Kinect myself, but seems neat! I like having a controller though...kids might not!
Toss and coin and go that way, haha.

Thanks guys. All good info and thoughts to ponder.
How does the memory effect the system use?
At the moment Hervey Norman - big retailer in Australia - has the Xbox 360 with 4gb for $148 and Kinect for $88 after a cash back offer. This might be the best deal since it also has the ability to play all the kids DVD's as well.

4gb? Thats not very much... PS3 has 320, I don't know about Wii but its not that much although because the games are simple it doesn't matter...

4gigs -
01.01.2012, 09:35 AM
Yeh 4 gigs of storage memory was a lot 10-15 years ago, but in todays computing realm anything less than 100 gigs is pretty much useless when you look at the sheer size of the games and what the requirements are for operating them is. Size does matter. Most of the computers being sold now a days are being sold with at least 6-8 gigs of operating RAM let alone their storage size, which are mostly in the 500 to 1terrabite of storage space. So anything being sold with 4gigs is pretty much obsolete. It will probably work fine, but it leaves little to no room for growth or expantion.

If you aren't playing a lot of games 4gb would probably be fine. I personally wouldn't like it, but you save a bunch of money avoiding the hard drive. You can expand the storage fairly cheaply down the line with a flash drive if you desire though!

I agree.
Unless you're putting games directly on the HD, 4GB is more than enough for user data. You can add up to 16GB via USB flash drive in the future, or it's about $100 for the Microsoft 250GB HD.
