Way Fast and a little hot! -
05.10.2006, 04:02 AM
I just gave my first BL set up a run out of the livingroom and into the dirt.....HOLY COW! I have never controlled acelleration like that! It was about 1/4 - 1/3 throttle and when I hit it - it flipped!
The controller and motor is getting hot - I measured 120F on both, but that was after a little cool down. Here is the set up:
12020/8 XL, 20T pinion, 51T strobe slipper, 12 cell IB 3800 (which are awesome!), UBEC, stock receiver/tires/diffs/trans, MIP CVD
Do I need a smaller pinion to keep it cooler?
Wow! What power!

Yea you need to down gear it to 18 t pinion. It'll run better when cooler.
Fan on the esc won't hurt either.
Get ready to buy some spare driveline part's. They will not last long.

Those temps are actually pretty good but i would gear down for longer runtimes.

Squee, It was actually hotter than 120, it took a minute to get the themometer out.
Will 18 do it? I was thinking 14-16 for the pinion.
As far as driveline, what should be the next purchase? I know diffs are on the list - any good recommendations for diffs? What would be next?

When I had an emaxx I loved the UE diffs, they were some beefy diffs that could take a beating.
Not to thread jack, but on my hellfire I'm running a 16t pinion and the stock gearing on the truck. The motor gets pretty warm so should I go down to like a 14tooth pinion. It's a 10l motor and a 9918 controller on 14 cells.

What brand is UE? I have looked on Mike's web site and have not seen that brand.

Does this mean you got the cog out of it? I would fall back a few teeth and run it.
Peace!

I have been running my Emax with MIP CVDs and stock diffs and havent had any problems yet. I however will NEVER buy MIP CVD again. That dumb pin they use is a pain in the butt. I ended up welding the pin holes closed so they wouldnt fall out.
I have the 8xl also on 4s lipos. Not sure about the gearing I run a RRP slipper 66t with 16t pinion and it seems like the right combo.
I would assume 66/16 is 4.125
so a 51t/20 is 2.55
try 51t/13 is 3.923
or 51/12 is 4.25.
Not sure if I got any of this correct but it seems correct to me.

The mip cvd for the center is a pain. Me and my brother wraped a clamp around it. That works wonders

Does a one-legged duck swim in cyrcles? ;) J/k
Mike's the pinion man, he fabricates, runs, sells and lord-knows-what them.
5mm is the most common here, too.
