Its the length of the motor arm and can. L is long and XL is... guess. :)
Generally XL are used as the L cans tend to run hot in large vehicles. 9Ls used to be pretty standard, but now its moves on to XLs for more reliability.
Turns? Depends on what you are going after. Is speed or runtime more important? 7XLs will be fastest,, but run hotter and for less time, 9Xls have long runtimes, but are not as fast, and a 8XL is a good balance of the two.
7XL: mid 40s mph likely
8Xl: low 40s
9Xl: hi 30s-40mph
Rough guestimate which will depend on your batteries, vehicle/tire weight etc of course, but you get the idea.
